Never been caught, employers at the self-checkout don't give a shit and the machine doesn't say anything as long as the correct weight is measured. A friend of mine told me about a guy they used to know. He'd go to the local chain here and pull the most expensive wine off the shelf. He'd take it to the customer service counter and ask for a refund saying that he got stood up on a date. They'd refund him in full and he'd use the money to buy his kids dinner and buy himself weed.

That sounds like bullshit, where I live stores cannot legally refund alcohol purchases, and every single corporate chain will at most give you store credit if you don't have a receipt so good luck buying weed with that

What else would you do at a self-checkout that's *devilish*? I suppose you could fuck up the equipment but if you get caught, that's a lot of money you'd be paying and you don't get anything out of it like you do stealing.

I had this happen a few weeks ago, just after getting surgery for a broken arm/wrist.
like fucking hell the stupid machine stuffed up the scanning amounts multiple times, the woman having to deal with 8 checkouts got pissed off and I eventually managed to get away with several free products. fuck them.

In the US we have a little podium with a computer and register on it where the self-checkout attendant stands and oversees the lanes. If you go in the early morning, though, it's rarely staffed. I've never ripped off a store via self-checkout but I'm sure it's easy to do.
