How is this done? I looked at a couple recipes. I have been cooking the little bastards for five hours and they are still crunchy. Also, feel free to fuck around here as this post is of little value.

MORE. Seriously, you are cooking them down into absolute mush. Did you presoak them overnight? Are you using a hamhock in the pot?

I take two cups of split peas, soak it for 4-6 hours in water. Then I fry onion, garlic and smoked pork meat in a pot, pour in the split peas, some water and cook slowly for about an hour, then I add some marjoram, more garlic, salt pepper and it’s done.

am I the only one who gets a weird sense of enjoyment when this happens? I remember the first times it happened to me when I was just a young, aspiring professional masturbator and it really shocks ya.

Yes to soak and I cut up and threw un one of those horseshoe sausages because, I have some kicking around. I'm going to have a big electric bill. It doesn't even seem close to being ready.

That's about what I did. Maybe they are green rocks that I mistook for food.

There's your problem. Maybe you'll move out of the ghetto one day and be able to cook with gas like a 1st-worlder.

Anyway, with split pea soup, you just cook it until it's done. Taste it. You'll know if it needs more seasoning or cooking time. It is impossible to make bad soup if you're tasting it and adjusting the seasoning.

That’s weird anon. It never took me that long. Dunn how can I help more. Buy some different brand or whatever and try again.

I love a good split pea soup with a big juicy ham hock to chew on. Maybe a grilled cheese too.

You misunderstand. I almost have it paid off. I'm well within my means as I bought the bitch is 2002. It has a gas dryer. There is no gas in the kitchen. Is it worth running a pipe? Heat is heat, right? I guess I can put an oven next to the washing machine.

I have the same problem as OP and tried the pressure cooker, peas just get destroyed to bits that insert themselves everywhere on the cooker and still stay crunchy, the peas I have are years old though.

>> No.13648926

>>13645416
Did you add anything acidic in with them? Tomatoes, vinegar, etc. will stop them from softening properly. Could also just be that the heat isn't high enough, it should actually be bubbling a bit during cooking. And obviously make sure they're completely covered with liquid until they soften.

>> No.13650204

>>13648926
Not at first. I cooked them alone and added onions and sausage later. We're eating it. (Plenty of leftover.) cooked all day and still not really right. I'm going to leave some in the fridge for a couple weeks and see.
>>13648924
Yeah, who knows how old they are.

>> No.13651367

>>13650204
Old peas dry out too much and never rehydrate properly so it could be that. If you have hard water that also makes them not soften properly, and you'd need to get a water softener or buy water for that.

I once cooked dried kidney beans for five hours and they remained the same after the first 45 minutes or so. I later found that they were very old beans and that past a certain point they will become virtually uncookable. How old are your peas OP?

>> No.13653177

Assuming it works like mushy peas, pre-soak with baking soda, then cook in a pressure cooker.
