It's one thing to know how to feed yourself as a broke college student,

It's another thing to know how to feed yourself when the dorm staff make getting access to the only kitchen in the building more effort than it's worth

what are some cheap recipes I can make in the microwave, or just without a stove?

>> No.13628894

been wondering this myself. the only way to use the kitchen is to sign up in advance, and it's usually booked solid. i've had some luck cooking rice in the microwave, but all of the cheap staple foods such as beans and rice are a pain in the ass to prepare.

I just get boars head meat and bread.
Then again I'm not broke

>> No.13628899

To be honest, you'd be better off getting one of those cheap gas rings and a small rice cooker from the local Chinese supermarket.
On topic, you can probably make a load of variations of scrambled egg with a microwave.

Same with steamed and seasoned vegetables.

they don't allow open heat sources in the room, so rice cookers and electric kettles are banned

Brutal!
I'd recommend getting a bunch of nice sauces and oils to add to steamed vegetables, meat and salmon. I recon buying a microwave steamer dish is probably the best option.
You could probably do congee in a microwave also.

they won't bother with your rice cooker it is no different from a coffee maker with a burner

>> No.13629086

>>13629015
No you don't get it, they allow any of that other stuff either.

they banned: electric kettles, coffee makers, single electric burners, gas burners, rice cookers, electric griddles, even microwaves other than the one provided to each hall

I get it but they won't figure out and if they do you just gotta throw away a $9 rice cooker. I went to 3 different colleges and nobody gave a fuck even though it's against the rules. shit, people do drugs in the dorms and barely get caught. a rice cooker won't fucking matter.

say you have a food allergy
go to on-campus doctor complaining you are allergic and need a diagnosis
campus doctor will already have a broken spirit and will give you one
then you bitch at the RA you can't eat any food on-campus for risk of cross-contamination and you need to cook food in your dorm

If they do not allow hot plates you can sorta use coffee heater. Also buy some glass containers, boil water add pasta +salt and cook on low until microwave aldente. Also oatmeal is your friend. I was never college student but made lots of military room food to save money, as my buddys would order food nearly everyday like idiots. "Anon you eating spaghetti again?" Me leaving Navy with 0 debt and 10k in bank and now free college plus they pay me 3500 dollars a month to go to school.. my buds with 20k car debt and 0 savings...

rice cooker isn't open heat source. it's a closed heat source. most dorm floor managers won't care and will let you out with loopholes. source: had an aquarium with snails and shrimp etc because "no fish" rule.

I could see cleaning becoming an issue. It would look awfully suspicious if anon comes out of his room with dirty dishes every day. I doubt he has a sink in his room. Still seems like bullshit, it's not boot camp, that RA needs to chill.

OP you need to move off campus ASAP. Dorms are more expensive IIRC.

>> No.13631405

Do what stoners do in the dorms: Tape a plastic bag over your smoke detector. Then you can just get a hot plate or whatever, as long as you don't have it out while your door is open and you crack your window so you aren't stinking up the hall no one is really gonna care if you're cooking. Maybe get one of the sweet lil induction cookers with the glass top.

I'd imagine frying all your good would get tiresome after awhile, for oven use I'd suggest buying a halogen oven which again is not an open heat source.
