Whisk(e)y thread: What should I buy next edition?

discuss all thinks related to Scotch, Bourbon, Rye, Irish, Canadian, and Japanese.

Why do the japanese fetishize whisky?

Why aren't there any Canadian whiskeys worth sipping on?

Why can't I stop thinking about whiskey?

I am Japanese. But I don't know the answer.
I cannot understand the question objectively because I only understand the Japanese way of thinking.
Japanese whiskey is still young. So the challenge is very fun.
However, many manufacturers other than Nikka fear individuality.
Whiskey without personality is boring.
So I love Nikka. So I respect British whiskey. I respect American bourbon.

In AUD where $100 is expensive, but not that expensive I would treat it as a starter drink. Have one, maybe two if you're flush, and then immediately switch to something cheaper.
If it's a bit more expensive than that I would skip it most times, saving it for occasions where my sense of taste is in perfect condition (no cold in sight, no allergies, etc) or for when I've had a particularly bad day and need some cheering up.
I'm pretty sure the latter is a fairly contrary opinion though. But there's no way I'd condone happiness stacking (ie celebratory drinking) as opposed to rounding out the bad days (smelling the roses, as it were).
If you reach the point where the price is so painful that it prevents you from drinking then you've gone too far beyond your means. Price is part of the whiskey and if it's too expensive then it's a bad whiskey.

Unfortunately I think they're gaining popularity now, akin to Japanese whiskey before the price hikes. If the price gets high too early then there is no incentive to age them.
So chill in the Kavalan hype.

But there is an opportunity cost, even within the Glen Moray distillery; the 12 year old is $55, and the 15 is $70.
And I've tried and confirmed every variation of Glen Moray unaged, except this one, is bad.

I think the market is big enough that there aren't that many unique products. There are styles and you should try something from each particular style. And the best pick for each style depends on personal preference and ever changing market conditions.

Try a Speyside. Glenfiddich was biggest, it might be Glenlivet now.
Try an Islay. Ardbeg, Laphroaig or Lagavulin are most popular.
Try a sherry bomb. Glenrothes or Abunadh.
Try a peat sherry mix. Talisker distillers edition or Highland Park.
Compare everything against their cask strength versions.
Try some non-islay peated whiskey. Dalwinnie 15 or Loch Lomond Inchmoan.
Try something old like an 18 year old version of those Speysides.

You get a bottle of laphroaig and don't drink anything else till you finish it. If you do this, you'll learn to appreciate peat and smoke, and then when there's hints of them in whisky that otherwise have the flavors you're looking for, your reaction won't be "damn this would be good if it weren't for that 5% of smoke they poisoned it with" it'll be "this is perfect."

"You only get to know a whiskey when you've spent some time with it. The first couple of drams are different than the last couple of drams... and sometimes your opinion can change dramatically over the course of the bottle."
I do agree. Also it's easy to shill a bottle, but it's a lot harder to shill a bottle if you have to drink the whole thing.
That said, our tastes don't match and the prick is actually living in the holy land so I can't get ahold of a lot of his recommendations.

Hey /ck/, I know fuck all about whiskey but I’m on a cruise right now and a mate is insisting I have to grab one from the duty free alcohol store to try. I’d grab some from one of the bars onboard to try but they charge $15 just for a small glass of the cheapest stuff, and I’m keeping most of my money for shoreside crap. What would you all recommend I get?

Yeah I was gonna grab some Bundaberg, the Belarusian fella behind the counter’s offering me discounts on everything because I spoke a little Russian with him so the expensive stuff is still pretty cheap now. Is the whiskey range really that average? I had someone recommend the Johnnie Walker Black & Blue Labels to me, and was thinking of grabbing one of them to try.

>> No.13630736

>>13630699
Johnny walker can be had anywhere in the world at a decent price. There's actually some money to be saved on the blue, so go for it, it's great. That said I think you can do better for the money even with the savings.
The range isn't great. Just blends and Bourbon. You don't want to buy Bourbon in Australia because a lot of them are reduced alcohol versions at bad prices and they don't have to live up to Bourbon laws like 40% minimum abv (and presumably the other laws, like corn or new barrels either).

>> No.13630758

>>13630736
Yeah I was hoping for some more variety honestly, but the Belarusian bloke told me they weren’t restocked with liquor after the last cruise so they’re working with a limited inventory. That's awfully scummy if true.

I looked into the US-Australian trade deals. The agreement is that Australia must conform to the American Bourbon standards. The American bourbon standards state that the rules regarding various distilled spirits only apply to products sold within the US, but I could not find any rules regarding internationally sold products.
So it is scummy. Of Americans.

There are Australian laws regarding what we are allowed to call whisky, however. They state 37% minimum, 2 years in a barrel, any cereal.

The half gallon of knob creek small batch has been my daily. Four roses SB is an old favorite. Henry McKenna BiB and Wild turkey SB are two I definitely like. I like Old Forrester statesman, so I'm looking forward to try the BiB.

Under US law, bourbon has to be aged in new barrels. In the '80s Brown-Forman started reusing barrels and stopped labeling Early Times as "bourbon." It's just "Kentucky whisky" now.
