Hey I used to live in Cromwell. There’s a great local joint there called Zerio’s, awesome grinders and pizza. Get something with their tomato sauce like a chicken parm - blows Nardelli’s out of the water.

And if you ever get up to Hartford go to Franklin Giant Grinder before they finally close up shop after like 60 years (their property is for sale). Fucking great cutlets.

As someone who has lived my entire life in south east PA, what’s it like to live in a sandwich desert where Subway is the best thing around? The closest Subway I know is about 10 miles away and always empty. Typically around here they only throw them in Wal-marts because they know that’s where the lazy trash people go and are likely to be too lazy and trashy to care about getting a shit-tier “””hoagie”””. There’s about 30 local hoagie shops and chains for every Subway/jimmy johns/etc here that it’s amazing they still try.

Yeah the pizza is awesome and all that, but there’s a lot of good stuff outside New Haven too. For example, roadside burgers / hot dogs (although there are a few less places now than there used to be): Al’s in Naugatuck, Clamp’s in New Milford, Harry’s in Colchester.

Carbone’s Market in Torrington has incredible roast beef and even better shaved ribeye (Saturdays only) and they give you like a fuckin pound of it on your sandwich.

It’s only once a year, too. But the ribeye they do every Saturday. I make the drive from Hartford and it is worth every mile.

These are not elegant sandwiches but they’re some of the absolute fucking best I have ever had

One other CT place I’ll mention for sandwiches is the Wethersfield Pizza House. They call themselves the “home of the chicken cutlet” - they’re far better known for their cutlets than their pizza. They stack them four high on a sandwich and they’re fucking great.

when I make a sub for myself, I always like to have german salami, bologna, sliced turkey breast, Mayo, yellow mustard, pickles, tomato, and white onion on a soft white roll.

If I feel like going a bit further I make a sub sauce out of pickle juice, oregano, salt, pepper, garlic powder, white vinegar, and olive oil.
