Because stupid people are not only the most likely to fall prey to Dunning-Kruger, they're also the least likely to leave their safe spaces and echo chambers and actually seek knowledge. Someone, somewhere said that modifying plant DNA will modify people DNA, and that sort of bullshit is easier to believe if you lack a fundamental foundation in science. See also: flat earth, anti-vaxx, keto and carnivore diets, chemtrails, etc.

Because it's "unnatural". I mean they're not wrong, but GMOs are for the most part completely safe and beneficial. People that think that just because it was modified genetically it some means that the food may have unintended side effects to those who consume it but that isn't true, it's possible yes but there are far more covert and eaiser ways to poison the population if one wanted to so it's not like it's done with malicious intent. What they fail to realize is the virtually all crops and even animals have been genetically modified through selective breeding over generations and doing this in a lab means it's much faster to get results.

How many studies have been done on the long-term effects IN HUMANS of ingestion of large quantities of bacterial proteins that we never evolved eating?

Follow-up question: When a neighbor's Bt corn blows pollen onto my non-Bt corn, how do I go about removing those Bt genes that are now contaminating my seed?

Oh right, you don't know.

But hey, every farmer should have to buy their seed corn from a handful of multinationals every year, because that's good for farmers AND food security!

>> No.13585089

>>13585072
2nd followup:
How do you control alfalfa and canola that have been GE-ed to resist herbicide, once those plants become weeds in fields, as is already happening?

Oh right, you have to go to Monsanto or some other big multinational to buy their new herbicide.

>Not being able to save your own seed to plant
>Totally relying on big multinationals and what seed they choose to allow you to buy
>Paying for an arms race between herbicides and weeds
>Thinner and thinner profit margins for family farmers

Sounds great! Great system, guys! You're all so smart, thinking you know the science or the reality!

>> No.13585094

The original issues were that:
with copyrighting/trade laws/whatever, Monsanto could get a monopoly on our food supply, since they owned the rights to produce all the food
GMOs lower biodiversity, so there could be a case where we all switch to a certain GMO crop, then it gets wiped out by a disease that only affects that specific strand, then we no longer have that crop.

>where does the meme that GMOs are bad come from?
Two reasons:
1) Rooted in sci-fi fears, what if there are consequences to modifying it!?!? Will we find out in 30 years that consuming something that didn't naturally happen will end up causing cancer? Will our children be born with 3 noses?
2) GMOs aren't just crops modified to be tasty, delicious, and hardy for freezes or long trips to the grocery. They could be bred for something amazing like feeding the starving people in the world...to resist drought, making them feed the world in places with horrible lean years where drought messes them up badly, but that it's modified to be resistant to bugs , how? By being resistant to death by pesticides and herbicides of a specific type. Crops are modified to be "Round-up Ready" which means that you can douse the field with spray, and the plant is known to survive it, not be killed, but weeds go byebye. So, that's fine, weeds are bad, but it also kills every living thing, bug on the ground, weed, flying insects, and including bees. What are the birds going to eat? Are they going to die when they eat a poisoned dying bug? Are they going to starve this summer from lack of bugs to eat? Is the loss of birds going to do something else to another food chain? What happens when no bees exist to pollinate the fruit on the orange grove or apple orchard next door on the neighboring farm?

My point is, we have a whole universe of things that are worse than it to care about before GMOs are considered an actual problem.

>But they aren't natural and cause X problems on people

Exactly. We used to select crops that show specific traits that we wanted, achieving gradual change over 100s of generations. Now we introduce completely new and foreign DNA into them. its just a new gene that causes a new trait that we usually desire, drought resistence, higher yields etc

but since gmo is in relative infancy. those genes might do more than we anticipate
do we be super cautious and test each modification rigorously to make sure that it wont also cause something else or do we do it for the benefit and react as evidence of negative consequences come to light

personally I think the pros outweigh the cons here at least most of the time

'Japan proposed the inclusion of a "racial equality clause" in the Covenant of the League of Nations on 13 February as an amendment to Article 21.'
'President Wilson knew that Great Britain was critical to the decision and he, as Conference chairman, ruled that a unanimous vote was required. On 11 April 1919, the commission held a final session and the proposal received a majority of votes, but Great Britain and Australia opposed it.'
'Wilson also knew that domestically he needed the support of the US western states who feared Japanese and Chinese immigration and the southern states who feared the rise of their black citizens.[44] The defeat of the proposal influenced Japan's turn from cooperation with the West toward more nationalistic policies.[45]'

'As a compromise with internationalist critics, the Big Four nations became the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, with significantly less power than envisioned in the Four Policemen proposal.[3] When the United Nations was officially established in later 1945, France was in due course added as the fifth member of the council at that time[4] due to the insistence of Churchill.

You know why the USA embargoed oil to Japan in the 1930s?
Because they invaded China.
Now why on Earth did the USA care what happened to China?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_Civil_War
The US strongly supported the Kuomintang forces. About 50,000 US soldiers were sent to guard strategic sites in Hupeh and Shandong in Operation Beleaguer. The US equipped and trained KMT troops, and transported Japanese and Koreans back to help KMT forces to occupy liberated zones as well as to contain Communist-controlled areas.[43] According to William Blum, American aid included substantial amounts of mostly surplus military supplies, and loans were made to the KMT.[51] Within less than two years after the Sino-Japanese War, the KMT had received $4.43 billion from the US—most of which was military aid.[43]

'Former Australian War Memorial principal historian Dr Peter Stanley states the Japanese "army dismissed the idea as 'gibberish', knowing that troops sent further south would weaken Japan in China and in Manchuria against a Soviet threat. Not only did the Japanese army condemn the plan, but the navy general staff also deprecated it, unable to spare the million tonnes of shipping the invasion would have consumed."[2]'

'The trouble is, someone forgot to tell the Japanese. The only real invasion plan appears to have existed in the minds of prime minister John Curtin and the Australian public.

Japan never seriously intended to invade Australia, a fact known to the Australian Government by mid-1942 and confirmed by intelligence reports, principal historian to the Australian War Memorial, Peter Stanley, said yesterday at a conference examining the events of 1942.

"I'm sick of the myth; it's time to knock it on the head," he said. "A lie told for wartime propaganda stays with us.

"From 1942, Australia's war contracted to its surrounding territory. The invasion myth helps justify the parochial view Australians took of their war effort. I'm arguing that there was in fact no invasion plan, that the Curtin government exaggerated the threat."'

The reason for the embargo was because the japs were taking over everything around them, raping, pillaging, torturing, they shit they were doing made NAZIs seem like amaturs and we the allies needed Australia as a place to launch missions from and also dock ships and fuel for our fleets.
It was an extremely strategic location and they speak English.

I think the fear of GMOs is that it causes a monoculture monopoly from plant clones with the same genes and if any kind of disease affects that GMO it will destroy that particular vegetable industry.
Say we make carrots with Corn genes because Corn is hardy, sweet and easy to grow. That becomes wildly popular, so Monsanto pushes it. The GMOs that Monsanto growns are proprietary and ONLY Monsanto products can be used on them and that causes soil degradation because now the only thing that grows is Monsanto Produce. These don't seed so farmers have to buy MORE products to stay afloat because Monsanto ruined the industry. Now you have Carrots and Corn with the same genes. Says a fungus affects that Gene, all of your corn and carrots are now gone because GMOs promote monoculture.
TL;DR: Monsanto uses GMOs with similar genetic codes so if there is a disease that can affect them the entire food industry is fucked for years because in a lot of fields the crops won't stand up to the chemicals in the soils after Monsanto GMO crops and Herbicides/Pesticides.
