I think the fear of GMOs is that it causes a monoculture monopoly from plant clones with the same genes and if any kind of disease affects that GMO it will destroy that particular vegetable industry.
Say we make carrots with Corn genes because Corn is hardy, sweet and easy to grow. That becomes wildly popular, so Monsanto pushes it. The GMOs that Monsanto growns are proprietary and ONLY Monsanto products can be used on them and that causes soil degradation because now the only thing that grows is Monsanto Produce. These don't seed so farmers have to buy MORE products to stay afloat because Monsanto ruined the industry. Now you have Carrots and Corn with the same genes. Says a fungus affects that Gene, all of your corn and carrots are now gone because GMOs promote monoculture.
TL;DR: Monsanto uses GMOs with similar genetic codes so if there is a disease that can affect them the entire food industry is fucked for years because in a lot of fields the crops won't stand up to the chemicals in the soils after Monsanto GMO crops and Herbicides/Pesticides.
