He isn't. He's no longer listed in the Michelin guide due to being an exclusive invite-only restaurant, but they say he still gets to keep the three-star rating.

People very easily drop $150-200 at a high end sushi restaurant, or a quality seafood restaurant, getting cold raw bar items by the pound Given that you're basically at a chef's table getting that observatory interactive experience, and he's not just Internet famous, or chef famous, but a full interesting documentary on him, and that he might die one day soon? Sure, 1 experience there could easily equal two experiences elsewhere. If I could go back in time and meet James Beard or Charlie Trotter, or Julia Child, people I followed but whatevs on opportunities, I'd do it. I regret not going to the last Cayman Cookout that Bourdain was there.

It's not that much money, and the ingredients he's sourcing, in a country known to be expensive for currency exchange and cost of living? There ya go. It's like buying 2 bottles of wine with your dinner.

Or go to both.

I can eat there or anywhere I want.
Its not a matter of that being the only money that I have, or only 1 layover day in his city before I die. It's the matter that he is old enough to be respected like anyone else that has done the same thing for 70 years, and won't be around for that many more months/years. His restaurant is extremely tiny, the equivalent of someone cooking in their house just for you.

One of the most popular documentaries on Netflix is Jiro Dreams of Sushi.
One of the least popular? Jiro Nightmares of Ass-Rape.

Nah. There's over 60 better sushi restaurants, so Jiros is way out of my radar.

nah. I've literally been to japan. For like ~60-80 usd yen equivalent, as long as you're in Sendai you can stuff yourself full of the best sushi you've ever had and get pretty drunk to boot in a single 'dinner'.

For the same reason that I don't buy bottom shelf shit, but don't pay more than 120 for a bottle of alcohol that I'm just going to drink myself (gifts are a slightly different case), it's really diminishing cost:quality returns beyond a certain point.

As much as I want to love Japanese food, I can't. Outside of Ramen and Okonomiyaki most of the food has the same flavor. It's not bad by no means but it isn't isn't on my bucket list when I think of foods to try out. Why is Japanese food taste the same?
