Get a soft pretzel and a pretzel-wrapped sausage at Gus' Pretzel Shop.

It's right across the highway from the Budweiser factory, and they make the best soft pretzels in the country.

It's the complete inverse of regular pizza:
thin crust instead of real crust
party cut instead of real slices
government cheese instead of real cheese

I had to go to East St Luis for work once. For lunch my coworker and I looked at a few restaurant names in the area and decided on some "fish hut" restaurant that was close by. We were driving there and as we got close we turned down this road full of burned down and condemned buildings. I saw two black kids wearing bandanas over their faces walk by on the sidewalk, and that's when we arrived at the fish hut. We decided to go to the McDonalds 25 minutes away instead.

Did you know that East Saint Louis is literally cursed by ancient dark gods?

True facts. The city was built over the ruins of a now-lost heathen civilization that built vast earthen pyramids and sacrificed maidens to appease the terrible hungers of their gods.

Why don't white people gentrify East St. Louis?
seems ripe for the plucking, it's not like blacks are gonna do anything to help make it vibrant

It's on the Illinois side of the border, so the higher state taxes would eat up a lot of the financial benefits of gentrifying.

It's a fairly large city, so you can get pretty much anything. If you're looking for something really particular to the city, give imos a shot. Maybe you'll like it, maybe you won't. I'd describe it as great garbage food. It's probably really good when you're drinking. There's a lot of hipstery restaurants if you go to the loop or the grove. I like seoul taco and mission taco joint, though the latter is cali mex, not a st louis thing. Otherwise I'd recommend barbecue. There's a lot of variety of southern/ midwestern styles, and it's all tasty. I like sugarfire, but I know there's some other pretty famous places that I haven't tried yet.

Stlfag here. The pizza is good, but nothing worth writing home about. Imos is the standard, but Cecil whitikers is probably the more interesting, classic stl style pizza.
Toasted ravs are legit, but a lot of places make mediocre versions, so don't be dismayed if the random bar happy hour ravs are kind of blah.
We do pretty solid BBQ here. Salt and smoke is for hipster faggots and is incredibly overrated. Sugarfire is a good option for consistency across the several locations. If you're into saucy BBQ, you'll love sugarfire. If not, their smoked turkey is the best in the city. Pappy's is a great option too, but it's been so popular for so long, it's lost a bit for me.
Gioia's deli is a must for a sandwich. Don't want to oversell it, but they have the best sandwiches I've ever had in my life.
Mom's deli and psghettis are two other sandwich shops that offer unique stl style eats that locals love. Psghettis has this awesome sweet bread for their sandwich which is really unique. These two a little more blue collar but stl legends.
Syburgs wings is another somewhat unique regional flavor offering. Their signature wing sauce is a unique flavor and consistency that's worth checking out. It is somewhat similar to Buffalo wild wings medium or mild sauce in terms of consistency, instead of a buttery style wing sauce.
Don't go to the east side for anything. The other poster who talked about it being a bombed out shithole is right. There are really good nigger filled joints on the other side of the river, but I wouldn't recommend it to visitors. Anything not in the shithole portion of IL is just lame white bread chains and nothing special restaurants.

Any other questions, AMA.
