I really liked Wild Turkey 101 and Buffalo Trace. What's some more bourbon I should try for sipping on the rocks? Recommend me some good brown.

Also, is Monkey Shoulder any good? I like Johnny Walker Black

For bourbon, I'd recommend Elijah Craig, or Buleit, though I find the Buleit bottle tacky, so I dont buy it as often as it warrants.

Where are you at? There are quite a few talented craft distilleries, and it's good to support local business.
Monkey Shoulder is a much better blended scotch than Johnnie Walker. Definitely worth picking up.
I recommend trying out High West bourbon.

I think I will spend my money on some scotch. I'll try Monkey Shoulder. What are some widely available single malts worth trying? I've had Glenlivet 12 on many occasions and find it too mild/boring compared to JW Black.

Also, what's a good rye for having on the rocks? Old Overholt and stuff seem like real cheap rotgut stuff.

Bros, I'm tempted to buy Sazerac Rye or Rittenhouse Rye since I have never tasted any 100% rye whiskey. However, neither of them is cheap and I still do not know if I'd like them (or one of them).

Tastewise, which is the main difference between a bourbon and a 100% rye whiskey? And, If i pull the trigger, is it better to spend aprox. 50€ on Sazerac Rye or Rittenhouse? I'm partially inclined to Sazerac mostly because I find the bottle cool as fuck.

Probably one the best bourbon I've ever tasted. Granted that I've never tasted super top shelf bourbon but this is very nice. The opposite happened with Widow Jane bourbon, found it very bland tasting for the prize.
Been willing to try Noah's Mill too, but seems to be quite hard to come by.

Rittenhouse 100 is pretty amazing, but if you're paying 50€ for it you're getting ripped off. At my store it's 28€ and that's still expensive compared to the US prices, where it's around 20$ I believe.
Sazerac is usually sold for around 50-60€, so that's more reasonable.

But I haven't had the Sazerac myself, so I can't compare it tastewise to the Rittenhouse.

Thank you for the input! Sazerac it is then. As I said, I'd never tried any 100% rye whisky so I'm pretty lost with prices (even though I know here it would be more expensive than in USA, that is).

So, what's the difference between bourbon and rye in taste? I've heard bourbon tends to be sweeter but rye tends to be fruitier but you know how those acclaimed "critics" are and I'd rather have an opinion of the common folk like me.

My current everyday "base coat" bourbon is pic related. Decent, but ridiculously cheap (last handle I bought cost $17 on sale). It's distributed by Luxco, but its actually produced by Heaven Hill, the guys that make Evan Williams.

As far as nicer ones go, I recently tried George Dickel Single Barrel and George Dickel Bottled-in-Bond. The former was disappointing, but the latter was excellent. I also got a bottle of Balvenie 12- Year Doublewood single malt scotch for my birthday this week per the recommendation of Whisky.com master taster Horst Luening. It did not disappoint, but now I'm not going to be satisfied with blended scotches ever again.

Why not Laphroaig 10? I'm not keen on these NAS whiskies coming out at the same price as regular offerings and I don't see why you'd let them get away with it.
Caol Ila seems like it'd fit best with your collection. It's not as complex as the other Islays though, which I suppose is what makes it so great for blending.

I read a whole article about what a sham Blue Label is, Johnny Walker buys overaged mash that's alcohol content has diminished and blends it with newer stuff to get the ABV up to 40 and then sells it at such a high price to recoup their loss on storing those incredibly old barrels, which is why there's no 'Aged for X Years' date on the label. The blends are all inconsistent year to year, you're better off buying a bottle of Green Label, though I will say the Blue Label bottle has stellar design and presentation if you can afford to blow that much money on aesthetics.

You can call the cops, but they won't do anything unless you have reasonable concern. I've worked construction, and the amount of drinking on the job is pretty damn high among the old men. I've had a foreman knock himself off a twelve foot ladder trying to wire 347V lighting while drunk, only to find a paperbag with a bottle of Canadian Club in his van when I drove him to the hospital. Another foreman, probably one of the best guys I've worked for, drinks "Indian coffee" out of a carafe regularly.
On the other hand, I went to the liquor store on a day off and saw a guy walk into his panel van with his haul. Ten minutes later, I was at the nearby gas pump filling up, and there he was in the parking lot, drinking at the wheel. I get that shit's rough, but the problem is that "rock bottom" is basically impossible for some people nowadays.

This Anon is correct. Low quality vodka tastes like acetone, mid tier is meant to be "neutral" and is good for mixing, although I wouldn't call it party trash because it is meant to be flavorless. High tier vodka (which a waste of money) should have a distinct character to its flavor. If you are spending primo dollars on high-end vodka you are an idiot who should be devoting your hard-earned bucks buying a darker liquor (or at least gin) with a similar price point.

If they're standing next to the bottles, looking confused or otherwise lost, then go do your fucking job and ask if they need help. If they then ask for your recommendations or opinion on a specific product or type of alcohol you can tell them what you think as professionally as you can. That means don't try to be their friend and banter with them by calling something they are interested in bad as that makes them feel like you think you're better than them. Instead ask how much they drink, what they typically drink and what they're currently looking for and then give them options. Like if they say they heard of Ciroc and are interested in it but don't know much about vodka, instead of saying "that's bad vodka don't buy it and instead get this" you show them the bottles you have but then you can add "and we also have this other brand that's very similar and very affordable but still highly regarded and we also have this brand that's in the same price range but considered to be an exceptional vodka" or something like that. All that comes with the caveat that I'm guessing you're an American and I'm not so expectations of customer service might be different.

The bottle of WT you have or bourbon in general? As far as the WT, maybe yes as you get used to it but that depends on you. If the alcohol kick didn't bother you and you just didn't like the taste then maybe no. Bourbon in general is pretty similar because of the laws that define what bourbon is limit it but there are ones that definitely taste different and depending on your taste can be better for you.

Rebel Yell is dirt cheap and a great mixer. I always buy a bottle whenever I get something more expensive so I don't waste the good stuff when I get mixed drink requests from friends and family.

I drink baijiu regularly. It's like Dark Souls. Sure, it's rough, but it's not nearly as rough as people make it out to be.
>>13564845
This is just false. Even a 150rmb bottle of moutai will have lots of subtle peachy flavours to it.
>>13564868
Good baijiu tastes kinda like getting hit in the face by a beautifully painted brick. There's a lot of colour to admire, but you are also getting hit in the face with a brick.
>>13564873
You really do have no idea what you're talking about. The burn is valued in baijiu.

Very drinkable tho for 90 proof.

Buffalo Trace is too well supplied for that to happen. They offer tiny bottles of it on flights and stores will use sales of BT to see if they qualify for any of the year's Pappy.

They are in the same price range. I think I paid 49.99 for small batch and around the same for Eagle Rare.

I'm not sure why but Eagle Rare is pretty difficult to find even in the motherland. Buffalo Trace really needs to step up their distribution game.

It's been sold out of my area on and off for months, and when they do get in they mark it up to ~$30 instead of $26. Luckily I have two bottles stowed away in case it gets bad, and I know a small liquor store about 50 miles away that has a good stock of it because their sales are so slow.

For Irish whiskey go for teeling, tullamore dew, powers, green spot, and redbreast. Bourbon & the like I'd go for high west, eagle rare, rittenhouse rye, knob creek, 4 roses. Those would be quite a decent start.

Yep, liquor store fag here, I don't recommend Buffalo Trace to anyone anymore, just Woodford Reserve and Basil Hayden's because it's okay and we have no trouble getting it, but all Buffalo Trace's shit is getting so hard to keep in stock, and they have a near monopoly on higher end bourbons.

Haven't had Old Gran Dad, but Buffalo Trace is the best that can be had for the price point IMO. It used to be cheaper, but I can't think of another Bourbon under $40 that's as good, it's not mindblowing it's just affordable quality which is why it's the standard that most people compare other bourbons to right now.
