Is there anything that can be done to cure picky eating in adults? I have a roommate that doesn't like any fish, mushrooms, onions and loads of other stuff. Makes eating with them really annoying.

Also how can I prevent it in my future child? I would feel so ashamed if I raised a picky eater. I've even read stories of people raising their kids and feeding them tons of different foods early but they still end up picky eaters.

>> No.13556273

>>13556248
I've looked into it and it seems sorta pretentious tricky even now. It seems doing the whole "eat what's on your plate or not at all" can work, but also don't force it too much. I'd say not introducing them to any sugary foods for a while, or keep it strictly for special occasions. We have high sense of taste while young, and pretty much all vegetables have some sort of bitterness. So they'll likely taste that and try to avoid eating it. Especially if they already know how sweet some things can be. Vegetables really are an acquired taste, but for most it happens while young so they don't think about it. Some people do have more taste buds than others so they might end up being picky because they can pick up more flavors, meaning more of a possibility of finding a flavor they don't like. It's not common though.

>eat what's on your plate or not at all
My mom tried this with me when I was a kid and all it did was make me learn to be cool with not eating. I still to this day have trouble sometimes keeping up with meals every day because it's so easy just to stay in bed and not bother eating.
>>13556248
> I have a roommate that doesn't like any fish, mushrooms, onions and loads of other stuff. Makes eating with them really annoying.
Why do you eat with them then? I don't get why you'd want to eat with anyone as opposed to eating comfortably by yourself honestly. It's not like having friends around makes eating more enjoyable. That's barely a step above wanting to shit with other people in the bathroom instead of alone. Doesn't make any sense.

Like most things when it comes to parenting, don't take the easy road because it's quieter/less hassle. Whatever behavior you're giving in on, it's guaranteed to escalate as they grow up and it's a bitch to reverse.

As far as food-specific advice, here's a few things: always encourage them to try new things, get them involved in the kitchen so they see how it's done, let them know there's no replacement for things they don't like, and rotate between making things you know they enjoy with dishes or meals that push their boundaries and get them trying new things.

I've heard enough stories from people whose parents did this to know that it's just as likely to hinder as it is to help. I think your point about sweet things is good though. Sugary stuff can fuck up adults eating styles never mind childrens.

I mean for one thing, economies of scale and sharing the cooking. Also if they're people you actually like then it's enjoyable.

>>13556308
Seems like the best advice. Letting them know what they're eating and how it's made lets them tailor foods to their tastes as well rather than just letting them think it's something that they won't like no matter what.

I should have been a bit more clear on that part. What I meant is it either seems to help or make matters worse in the West. One way to turn someone off of something is to give them a negative experience attached to it, but for others might see the situation different. Japan seems to follow this style, I hear the schools only give one option a day, and they don't seem to be picky. But there's a lot of reasons I that I can see where it only works for Japan and not many others, especially the West.
My parents use to do this, but somewhere along the line, probably due to stress and four kids, they caved in and stopped. Dinners had to be something everyone ate. I ended up being a picky eater myself, and would say I still am. I've been working on it for the past 6-7 years and have been able to make significant progress.

>>13556308

Not introducing sugary stuff is correct, and helps a lot. Soda should be something they don't know the taste of until they're like 8 at least, and avoid juices because they're just as bad.

As for
>eat what's on your plate or not at all
My advice is doing what my parents did to me. They allowed me to choose how big of an overall portion I got so I learned how much I could actually handle eating, didn't overeat when I was hungry, and wasn't given an unreasonable task when they made me eat all of it. I chose the portion size, but they kept the ratio of foods on the plate consistent between all of ours, so I couldn't avoid eating something I wasn't a fan of just by taking a tiny bit. You don't offer the kid an option not to eat, that's abusive to refuse to let them eat later when they made a shitty decision earlier when they weren't hungry. But what you /can/ do is not let them leave the table until they've finished everything on their plate. They have to eat all of the food they took before they can get up, even if that means they're sitting there crying for half an hour while you do something else. It will show them that hot food is better, and you eat what you're given if you were hungry enough to eat.

Also, it's important to give them a diverse palate early on. I grew up in New England so we ate a lot of seafood, but nobody I know as an adult will even consider eating anything besides fish sticks, meanwhile I suck down oysters rockafeller like nobody's business. My brother is a sperg who pitched fits about anything that wasn't pizza, hamburgers, Mac and cheese, mozzarella sticks, or chicken. My mom made him a separate side dish for every meal of his life because they figured it wasn't worth the screaming battle that would ensue otherwise.

Nowadays I'm 22 and I'll try anything at least once, think I have a pretty good palate, and have overall good food habits. My brother is 18 and has ordered a cheeseburger at every restaurant we've been to for 10 years, and before that it was mac and cheese every time. We literally cannot go to a restaurant that doesn't have a burger in the menu. Nice seafood restaurant? Burger. French restaurant? Burger. Mexican place? Burger. Chinese? Burger. It's infuriating. It's so limiting and I'm embarrassed for and by him.

When I was a tiny thing I ate anything and everything but as I got older I got really picky and I'm not sure why. I used to scoff down prawns like a vaccuum cleaner - me and my brothers got banned from eating at the seafood section of a chinese buffet when we were on holiday in Florida one time, go figure, also we used to wander round the supermarket eating pickled mussels out the jar.

Then I suddenly didn't like seafood or broccoli, cauliflower, anything green really. Eventually I got over that shit, but it was because I enjoyed cooking shows and gradually expanded my palate by growing more curious of how the beautiful food must have tasted.

So I think that it might be a good idea to be as adventurous with your cooking as you'd like to be and include your kid or your flatmate or whoever during the whole process - and be positive and excited about it. Make it desireable and they'll probably want to try it. Make it a fun experience and they'll want it to be fun.
