Daily reminder that if you tip, you are only encouraging the continuation of bad service in the US. Tipping directly encourages poor service, because it builds a sense of entitlement in the server. Pretty much anyone who has lived in multiple countries can back this up: look at a map of countries that allow tipping, and countries that don't. All the countries that do allow tipping are known for bad service, like the US. While countries that make tipping illegal are known for good service, like Japan.

Do your part to encourage better service in the US, and don't tip.

Honestly, after spending 3 months in Japan, after coming back to the US I started feeling bad everytime I tipped anything, so recently I just stopped tipping altogether. Most states are allowed to only pay the server anywhere from $9 to $3 an hour due to tips because the standard only has to be about $2 an hour in tips.... That's $11 an hour at it's highest.
Also even in Seattle where minimum is $15 an hour, most servers only make $11 due to the $2 an hour in tips, again, only $13 an hour, in Seattle, where average rent is $1500.

the tipping system is weird and often silly, but it's the system we have in the US. in the case you mentioned, if you're rich enough to spend $1000 on a bottle of wine when you're dining out, you're rich enough to tip well (if the service was great). the waiter or waitress is spending his or her night to serve you, meanwhile you're sitting there sipping a $250 glass of wine. their night fucking sucks compared to yours, but you can make their night if you tip well. so you're either a) the nice rich guy who tips well and who will always get a table/great service/special requests or b) the stiff who comes in and buys expensive shit and doesn't tip well.

If you have 10 tables that night you will clear $100, but most places you have to tip out BOH too, so roughly taking home $70-$80 a night, which is a lot in places where the check is ABLE to get to $100>, but a lot of serving jobs won't clear $50> on a table unless it's 4 people or more.

Basically, the cost of living is always rising, so you tip in professions where it is standard so they can afford to live. Is it completely fair? Not always, I mean imagine you work at Subway making $60 in wages vs a sever who is clearing $100 in tips not including minimum wage, sure there is a discrepancy at times... You've tipped, proportionately, the same. But people argue you have to increase the percentage to account for inflation. The great thing about percents is they account for inflation.

I dont eat out a lot but I feel that the only people that earn their tips are delivery drivers, considering they have to pay for gas and repairs on their vehicle, as well as actually go into some sketchy places to do their job. Waiters have the comfort of a small building to work in while delivery dudes drive around town and in some cases cant even carry a weapon to defend themselves from getting robbed, which isnt a thing waiters have to worry about. If they fuck up an order they cant go back and fix it right away so it has to be right, and if they do go back and fix it they earned well above their pay grade in my eyes.
Cant forget that most delivery dudes want to shoot themselves while the stacies working the tables are numbskulls.

Not the other anons but I will say that yes at a high class restaurant the server does earn their keep.
Things like menu suggestions, knowing where food is sourced from and wine pairings are important skills and information.
But lets get back to reality here, your average restaurant and your average server are not like this.
