I'm jealous; $40 is the minimum for a bottle of bottom shelf booze here.
You probably wont be able to go back to cheaper bottles except as mixers. Though you will be better able to pick out value for money so there are savings to be reclaimed there.
As for drinking other liquors, yes you will be able to. But you'll have to find out which ones are taking their spirits seriously. Even then you'll probably lose some value for money.
For example I've found some very high quality gins, including those that are cask strength and barrel aged. I've had a peated mezcal. I've had a nice over proof rum, as well as some 10ish year old rums that shit on similarly aged Speysides, though you certainly pay for that. I've had several congnacs with interesting cask finishes.

>>13539010
I haven't had that particular bottle, but it's sherry finished. A balanced mix of smoke and fruits is common enough in medium-high end blends, but only in Islay distiller editions do you get that balance without a substantial loss in intensity. You should have no worries being able to notice the difference.
However that price tag is steep. Consider the competition
Talisker's is the cheapest. Laphroaig Select and Ardbeg An Oa are up next, but they use a mix of casks, so they're probably not that fruity. Ardbeg Uigeadail and Laphroaig Lore are almost as expensive as the Lagavulin.

The point is that they're both very different because one is an american bourbon and the other an irish whiskey. Think of pepsi and coke taste wise except I would say the difference is larger but not large enough to draw equivalents to Fanta and Coke. They're both very popular and inexpensive whiskeys. Both are liked by many people but not really loved by many. Mostly you would find people using them as mixers. If you're looking for something to sip neat then taste both and decide for yourself. If you're mixing then just pick the one that makes the more interesting cocktail to your tastes because you're not going to taste much of the spirit especially if you're not familiar with it. My recommendation and favorite is 1 part Jameson, 2 parts ginger ale and a good squeeze of a lime in tall glass with ice.

>>13538838
I've never tried Jim Beam but Jameson is the only whiskey I've ever enjoyed more mixed than neat because I don't like the taste or the smell much. Too metallic or whatever. I assume it's the note that most refer to as "grass clippings" though I've never smelled grass clippings like that.

American whiskey is totally fine, but i hate the scotch industry. Charging lots of money for basically extreme cheap products made from cheap grain and mostly aging in used barrels. The usage of wet barrels is another thing that pisses me off. Also im asking myself why the limit themself to 100% malt for their premium products and shit on every other grain existing. American whiskey shows that the usage of varient cereals works really well.
I mean nobody really cares for relatively young whiskys aged only in ex bourbon casks. Most interesting and talked about ones are those aged in wine casks or the peated ones.

I'm not even hating scotch itself but the industry and the fan boys. Many of them never even tried a wide variety of some other spirits like cognac, rum, calvados but keep bitching on them, because they never were popular in last years/centuries unlike scotch.

TheWhiskyEchange doesn't have good prices here once you add on alcohol and sales tax. Also there's a bit of a gotcha when ordering alcohol around here; it's illegal for couriers to leave it at the post office, they have to take it back to the depot and then they recharge you for second delivery.
Which means you either need to be permanently at home, or you need to work for a company that will allow you to deliver booze to work.

Always try every gin straight. Good gins, like good scotch, should be sipped.
However if it is good you can still drink it with a very neutral tonic water. Cascade would be my choice, not that you'll have that.
If it's shit (it is below par) you can drink it with a more flavourful tonic like Capi. Which I just found out is also Australian. Maybe you'll have to add citrus if no bright tonic water can be found.

Nonsense. Gin necessarily has the most complex taste because it has the most additives. The juniper flavour can be subtle and juniper does not need to be used, at least not in Australia, let alone used in high proportion. Not that juniper has a particularly strong flavour anyway. Especially when compared to the botanicals used.

You're leaving out notes that are typically unique to bourbon, such as molasses, dark brown sugar, peanut, and bursting ripe fresh corn.

There's also the fact that the barrel it's aged in doesn't only affect the flavor, the type of grain used, the combinations of grains, the water used, the air quality during the distillation phase, and the number of times it's distilled all have an effect on the potency, taste, and smell of the whiskey. I like knob creek, but I genuinely find it less interesting than stagg jr and bookers, and those less so than laphroaig 10. Actually, bookers might be par for me with laphroiag.

Have you had knob creek rye twice barrelled? IMO it's a solid cut above standard knob creek/KC rye. Drinking it alongside scotch it was pleasantly spicy. The moment it touched my tongue, it felt like a cousin of capsaicin rushed through my whole mouth, but not overwhelmingly so.

I think we can agree, however, that both scotch and bourbon are superior to Irish whiskey, which is boring as hell. Sure it's lovely smooth, but it's relatively character-free. Looking at you,

Bottom tier rum is always better than bottom whiskey, because of its usage/mixing potential. You don't sip bottom tier rum, simple as that. That's why even Captain Morgan can be enjoyable as an ingredient, even in baking. While sipping it is just awful. Bottom whiskey is just plain bad, its the one step above Jager type of people's drink. Its the best to stay away from them, hell even Jager is better, because bottom whiskey is just bad, and commonly consumed by those who either never had whiskey and its their first or those who are virtue signaling.

MG is more aggressive, you can feel a kick from it after drinking, but in a good way, also it has a strong wooden smell. PT is smoother, more refined, lighter, more fruity, and it doesn't have that afterkick effect.

>Bottom tier rum is always better than bottom whiskey, because of its usage/mixing potential. You don't sip bottom tier rum, simple as that. That's why even Captain Morgan can be enjoyable as an ingredient, even in baking.
I bought some rum recently (pic related) for baking and tried one sip since I never had it before but... it was really disgusting. I also tried it in a Dark n Stormy but that was also awful. Though I think I might also dislike ginger beer so it wasn't a fair shot. So do I just dislike rum or is your statement above false? I did not have the same reaction from cheap whiskey/brandy/gin. I had a mojito once and remember liking it. I was thinking of making a daiquri but it's not white rum so I'm not sure if it works.

Pott is for grogs and baking/cooking only. Doesn't even goes very well with coke. I not even sure if it's 100% rum. Many other especially the really cheap "Übersee Rums" only contain 10% Rum while the rest ist neutral spirit. Just buy some Havana Club and mix some daiquiris or moquitos with that. Best workhorse for drinks like that.

Again, bottom tier rum by alone tastes like crap, its a fact, there is no other way around it. Buy something what's proven to be good, its pointless to bother with experimenting low tier rums, because there is a fuckhuge chance its just a cough syrup at best and a sugary ethanol with brown food color at worst.
Also its pretty common knowledge that a shit ingredient produces a shit food. Different brands have different tastes, also most of these don't even really qualify as rum, these are products you stay way from, because they have as much to do with the name rum as you being a master distiller. Stay with Captain Morgan in low tier its the king of the worst, when it comes to rum, and at least its Caribbean, so it has some connection to the name rum. With coke+rum coke has a strong enough flavor to smooth out CM's bad parts, like its ethanol.
As for the last different people have different tastes, for example for me Diplomatico is a cough syrup, while others love it. It gets high ratings, shilled up the ass by every seller, it gets awards, yet it was probably the most disappointing thing when it comes to alcohol for me.

>I think we can agree, however, that both scotch and bourbon are superior to Irish whiskey, which is boring as hell. Sure it's lovely smooth, but it's relatively character-free. Looking at you,

Uhhh, no. You've clearly not had very many Irish Whiskey's if that's your opinion on them. Buy a bottle of Connemara, and have it change your view entirely on it. Or Green Spot. Irish Whiskey is typically very light and challenging without relying on the peat to cover-up its lack of profile. Pointing to Redbreast is doing you no favors palette-wise, since everyone knows and agrees Redbreast is one of the very best Whiskey's, particularly for how creamy, smooth, short-biscuit, and peppery it is. t. Has never had alcohol before. I prefer to drink alone. The taste of alcohol scientifically has a wide range of flavors.

In the most straight forward and simplest of explanations, the tannin's from the barrel bind to the alcohol, pulling it from the barrel as it ages. Of course there's much more involved in the process of shaping the flavor profile of the alcohol which can change during any step of production.

Daiquiris just taste like summer. Lightest of all sours imo. Also very refreshing for a cocktail. Hemingway Daiquiri is even better but you'll need maraschino liqueur for that. Many other drinks containing only light rum also demand some other uncommon ingredients. Just search for some recipes. Most rum cocktails call for aged rum though. Just buy some Appleton, Plantation or other relatively cheap and easy to come by rums and experiment with those.

First off, people make faces all the time when they eat anything that's spicy, sour, salty, or bitter, so that's irrelevant.

Secondly, no, you don't see me make any faces, because I don't drink in public, fag. I drink in the comfort of my own home because it's relaxing, smooth, and nice-tasting, (and cheaper) which completely blows away your "stature" and "pretentious" arguments.
