Poor ones do (up to lower middle class).
If you live in a detached, victorian house with wooden floors in the hallway, you tend to have a centrepiece of some roasted/grilled meat/fish (seasoned and with herbs and spices), an accompanying sauce or sauce selection (usually gravy), mashed potatoes, roast vegetables (including roast potatoes), and yorkshire pudding. It's not though, being british I can instantly tell from the shape that that's from an orange warburton's loaf, with some nice butter on it. Presumably you're american since you said wonderbread, so imagine wonderbread but not sweet, with perfectly salted butter on bread than you would consider the perfect density, this combined with the savoury meal causes the reactions seen above, because they're british, and know that orange warburtons is the best and all others are pale imitations. They just imagined putting some of that mince and potatoes on one half and folding it over into a sandwich, and they were instantly transported to their childhoods.

British food used to be about simple but excellent quality ingredients, with almost nothing going to waste (if it wasn't used in a meal, it was saved for another meal or ingredient etc). All cooked simply in a way to let the ingredients shine through.

Only recently it's polarised into either bland, tasteless slop made by people whose boomer parents never taught them to cook, or Americanized overblown sugar-laden poison, filled with fake ingredients made in buckets in a lab. And our ingredients get sold abroad for maximum profit, and we buy in complete shit to use ourselves. Asparagus and Strawberries are excellent examples of this. Beef and lamb too.

If you want good English food, have dinner at somebody's nan's house. Some old dear in her 70s or 80s who remembers the old ways, and buys her meat from a local butcher, not Tesco.

It was never fireworks on a plate, but it tasted great and was nutritious as fuck.

They're normal peas, but prepared and cooked so that they break down a little and become almost a pea sauce. Usually lower quality end-of-season peas, which can be harder and a bit tasteless, making them mushy peas was a way to release more flavour and weren't like eating marbles.

Like when you cook baked beans long and slow and they become pasty and delicious. Same thing with peas, only they get soaked beforehand with some baking soda, which makes the skins softer and speeds up the mushing process.
