Not the person you are replying to but I am Californian. I'm actually not sure how to rank California style pizza, the general idea is thin crust with ingredients that focus on being locally sourced/sustainable and often eclectic toppings. This is double edged, on one hand it can often be hipster bullshit that costs $20 because they got the cheese from the far off and mystical land of Fresno and often the eclectic ingredients part is taken too far. On the other hand choosing ingredients carefully is actually pretty fucking important when pizzas only really have 3 main ingredients. California pizza is also a lot more like Italian pizza than American pizza with all the good and bad that comes with. In my opinion California is the best of the North American styles because we actually care about what is going into the pizza and aren't stuck in dogmatism for pizza of all things, while New York, Chicago, Detroit etc. just argue about and masturbate over how thick their bread is and how much mozzarella they have, but that could just be my home bias. California pizza either is overpriced garbage or the best on the continent, no in-between.

That being said, good pizza can come from anywhere because pizza isn't hard. I think the tern flyover is bullshit and being from a certain area isn't a magic charm that makes pizza taste good.
