Are most Johnny Walker Scotch whiskies overrated/overpriced?

All alcohol is, you're better off pissing in your mouth and running head first into a lamp post rather than paying any amount of money to get drunk.

Do you suggest any good scotch whiskeys that are similar to Green label? My uncle is a bit of a Johnny walker fan and I never really cared about scotch, but after drinking half of his green label during NYE, I can’t stop thinking about scotch. Do you have any links to some good scotch guides?

But I also don’t want to pay over 100 dollars for good scotch.

They replaced Green with Gold. You're better off with Gold or Platinum since they're good without the ridiculous price of Blue.

>> No.13474604

Gold/Blue Label, definitely. Red/Black Label, not really. The others I'm not sure about.

>> No.13474613

>>13474604
I can’t stand black or Red though. I’ve tasted green, and it’s ruined Black/Red for me. I kind of just want a cheaper non Johnny Walker alternative that has similar taste notes to a green label.

You might want to check out Talisker; I'm given to understand that it's one of the main components of Green Label and the 10 year is slightly more expensive.

What do you mean “one of the main components”?

Johnnie Walker is a blended Scotch, which means that whisky from several distilleries go into it. By contrast, a single malt comes from one particular distillery and is almost always named after the distillery it comes from; in this case, Talisker is a distillery on the Isle of Skye.

Two types of scotch: Blended and Single malt.

Single Malt is scotch that is from a single distillery (however, it is a blend of multiple 'batches'. This is done to increase consistency of flavor, as any given cask is going to vary a bit from the next). Most single malts tend to have very defined personalities.

Blended scotch is made by balancing multiple single malts. Generally lowers the volume on any particular characteristics of the scotch and achieves a more 'balanced' (some would say bland) flavor. IMO some blends are good in their own right and better than some single malts, but generally much less interesting than the vast majority of single-malts. For example, I think Macallan (single malt) are gross and would rather drink JW black or cutty sark. Those two are par with glenlivet for me. However, if laphroaig, glenmorangie, ardbeg, talisker, bowmore, balvenie, oban, or lagavulin are available, I'll take any of them over the blends.

I haven't had green, but you should try Talisker 10, Old Pulteney, or Balvenie 12. These are gonna be way more expensive than you'd like, and will initially be kinda gross, but then you'll wonder how the fuck you ever liked basically any other whiskey and will start going for more and more islays and WELCOME TO SCOTCH, YOU'RE A SNOB NOW. ENJOY.

or if you absolutely must be cheap, I hear monkey shoulder is pretty decent (though I've not had it.)

Thanks anon. I think I might just stick to beer until I’m no longer a poorfag student. I know how impulsive I get about the finer things in life, which makes me spends a shit ton for prime beef or San Marino tomatoes. I’m going to stay away from Scotch until I get a good job.

Yup. My dad drinks a bottle of Jamison ( ya, ya Irish) every day and when he retired 2 years ago I bought him a bottle of Johnny blue for $250 and he won't drink it because it's too smokey. It's still sitting on his kitchen counter

Any of their component single malts might be worth looking at, especially Talisker 10 and Caol Ila 12. If you don't want as much smoke then look at Clynelish 14 which is a good mix of fruity oily Highland style with a light peat touch.
