Originally it was because it was white and the US wanted to sell it to England but didn't think they would buy white cheese. So when it finally got shipped with that orange color added it was called "American Cheese" in England.

The only plausible explanation I heard was that back in old timey days the better aged cheese from grass fed cows had a more yellow tinge to it, so to boost sales of not as yellow cheese they started coloring it. after many moons people forgot whatever the real reason was and just colored certain cheeses yellow.

Depends where you are in America. On the East Coast, say cheesemaking region like Vermont, cheddar is generally white. As you move towards the Midwest, you can get both white and orange cheese. In the West, the cheese is orange, period.
Its simply a color people find appealing. Margarine would be completely white and look like lard if sold as-is. But, as a butter substitute, it is colored yellow. The dairy industry was not happy about this. If you are interested in history, try reading some nonfiction.
