Why is mom's cooking so romanticized? My mom isn't the worst cook, but she's not the greatest either. She's decent, but my Dad is wayyyyy better. My mom makes stews and the like, I hate stew. Stew is the absolute worst. Also when she makes bolognese its too watery, but she refuses to fix it because she thinks she is a great cook. Anyone else's mom not a great cook?

My mom is a fantastic cook. She’s disabled now, so I cook all the food for our family, but it was her dream to become a professional chef, to go to culinary school. We used to go over recipes in a bunch of our cookbooks together and make these fantastic dinners together. She started teaching me at eight how to make basic stuff, like quick spaghetti, how to properly chop and dice an onion, how to hold a knife. It was something we bonded over. She would experiment and make her own recipes which were so fucking delicious. Terrible at writing them down though, lmao. Made a deep dish pizza one time that was godly, but didn’t write out measurements for the sauce. She made a cranberry glazed turkey one year that I still fantasize about every thanksgiving. Though the brine was full of stupid expensive ingredients. Can firmly say my mom was a fantastic cook. Dad is great at grilling and breakfast foods, but that’s about it. My grandma is not the best chef, but she made edible homecooking. Definitely not passionate about it.

I can't imagine a parent being a "good cook," and every time I go see someone's family or travel with a girlfriend to have their parents' "amazing cooking," it's really nothing to be excited about.

I'm not a fantastic cook either. But I have no nostalgia about it, and I leave it to the professionals and my parents cook a decent meal a couple times a year. I like that I learned to not count on them in this case.

OP here, remembered a story.

At work on Friday, my coworker was talking about how happy he was that his mother was visiting on the weekend because she was making her "special lasagna recipe". He talked about it at length and I told him lasagna is rather simple to make and I couldn't see it being that "special".

Today, he brought in lasagna for other coworkers and gave me 1/4 of a piece he gave them so that I would, "know why it is special".

It tasted like generic lasagna. He asked me how it tasted and had an almost triumphant expression. Knowing the answer, I asked him if she made her own sauce and pasta. He said no, but she spices and customizes it herself.

I then asked him how he considered it her "special recipe" when she basically assembled pre-made, store-bought ingredients. He tried to hide it, but it was obvious he was upset and realized that I had won this time. He avoided eye contact when he walked past my desk 10 minutes ago. I definitely won.

This experience has gotten me thinking: what do you consider home-made? Obviously I would not expect someone to grow and mill their own flour to make pasta, but there is an obvious medium between that and throwing together processed foods and calling it your "special recipe".

Discuss.

>Why is mom's cooking so romanticized?
Because you usually grow up with it and it becomes a thing you think back on and associate with comfort as the food you became familiar with before anything else and were fed at a time when your life was being taken care of by someone else.
>but my Dad is wayyyyy better
A father's cooking isn't romanticized in the same way normally simply because it's much more common for your mom to cook, if you even had anyone cooking food at home when you were a kid at all. Your options are usually stay at home mom or both parents working. Stay at home dad is a lot less common. And dads that work don't have the same amount of time or willingness to cook, more often than not.

Use more wine or add some spices and tomatoes. Use acid to keep everything from overcooking and season heavily for flavour.
If you've finished cooking a stew, you did it too quickly.

My mom was a terrible cook. I didn't realize it when I was a kid. Everyone just thought I was a picky eater, and I was punished for it. It wasn't until I moved out, poor, and started cooking for myself that I realized that my mom always overcooked everything, never used spices, and other sins. Her food was dry, hard, and bland, just like my cock.

My mom does pasta in the same way. It's just boomer shit they learnt from their parents.
She still rinses pasta after I've shown her why to never do that. She thinks it 'stops it cooking' and wonders why the sauce never sticks like mine does.

About two generations ago parents knew what they were doing because their parents taught them; however, that generation didn't teach it to their kids. So, roughly 50 years ago, the adults grew up not knowing how to cook and going back to mom's cooking because it actually was better. Then, the meme perpetuated itself via them becoming grandmothers/fathers and them and their kind making media etc that pushed the idea because it was so ubiquitous.

My mom cooks one or two things great because she follows the recipe, everything else is terrible because she doesn't follow the recipe or likes to add to it.
She overcooks everything, she doesn't season, all her meats are well-done x10, it's awful.
For years I thought I hated vegetables, meatloaf, etc. until I was a teenager and cooked for myself. Meatloaf is fucking delicious when you cook it right, instead of dumping ground meat in a pile, cooking it, then slathering it in ketchup and saying it's a meal.

>> No.13433217

my mother is a terrible cook. This can be partly explained by the fact that she is vegetarian so she doesn't have "skin in the game" when cooking non vegetarian food. However, her vegetarian cooking is just as bad, so who knows, I guess she just doesn't care about taste.
My late grandmother on my father's side was a very good cook in the style of traditional western food, so I can understand why this meme exists, it's simply that the line was broken with my parents generation. Probably due to feminism or something.

It's true though.
Men are better cooks no question, but historically they're not the home cooks.
The reason "mom cooking" is as big a meme as it is was because mothers HAD to be the cooks there was no other choice under the older patriarchal systems

The fact that women would get beat just for dinner being late and now women aren't even decent at cooking just goes to show that women were only cooks because of older societal structures.

The people in this thread who express confusion for everyone talking about how their moms cooking was so good, yet their own mother was a terrible cook just goes to show the familial dynamic shift in more progressive areas.
I don't know why you think this is /pol/, it's a fact women were treated as homemakers, and that included cooking
