Buy a cheap barrel smoker and learn the basics before jumping into an expensive one.

Just flavor your food with liquid smoke, it's cheaper and easier and you won't know the difference

You'll use it twice and then sell it years later during a move.

This. OP just buy a regular ass grill if you don’t have one, then buy a $20 steel wood chip box. You’ll get an intro into smoking and you won’t waste hundreds of dollars.

I actually eat a lot of BBQ but it’s expensive as hell so I’m going to make my own at home. I would use it at least twice a month.

This, I was even going to suggest making Alton Brown's cheap cardboard smoker
Just to experiment with what kind of experience you like

Shouldn't a cardboard smoker work for 95% of cooks? I mean you aren't competing.

I'm assuming, especially if you don't need a more intense smoky flavor--but the more industrial ones have a sort of standard of quality
Basically they are harder to fuck up and can often use to a higher quality

But yeah, for a home cook, you really don't need to spend that much on a smoker

Once you see how much dedication and time put into smoking good meats takes, you start to realize smokers are more then just a 'grill'. They are a hobby, or more, they aren't just a gimic you buy and abuse for a few months and let rot in your basement.

I've seen many friends and family go down the path of buying an expensive smoker and they don't even use it or use it for just basically a charcoal grill.

To fully utilize a smoker you need to be into preserving, hosting people, basically cooking in large batches. You can't just whip out your smoker to make a family meal everyday, it's a special thing.

Get an electric smoker.

The whole point of smokers is low, slow and _consistent_ heat and there is no way charcoal can compete with electricity for maintaining temperature. There is no need to become some kinda charcoal wizard and ruin all kinda expensive meat trying to figure the magical perfect temperature and time, just program it and walk away.

I had an expensive smoker and got pretty good at it, but as mentioned by other anons unless you're cooking for large groups it's not worth it.

I now just smoke with pic related and just regulate the smoke and heat by moving the charcoal around, soaking my chips, etc. It works for the family and I can still grill with it if I want.

Smoked a whole turkey a couple weeks ago.
