The problem is that, despite having the second most arable land in the world, the commodification of agriculture by large corporate conglomerates results in profit coming first and actual food needs of the country not being prioritized. The USDA subsidizes resource inefficient industries which produce unhealthy products - beef (cows usually fed corn fodder - try shoveling corn shit out of a cow's asshole you urbanfags) and dairy. The USDA also subsidizes cash crops - corn, soybeans, wheat. This results in fruits and vegetables skyrocketing in price and leaves us dependent on China and Mexico - both of whom charge tariffs on us - for healthier produce.

A significant portion of the corn is used for the biofuel meme and ethanol, and much of the corn goes towards HFCS which is pumped as an artificial sweetener into everything. Soy filler is abundant in many foods, and even bread is bleached to shit and pumped with HFCS instead of having whole grains.

When you combine this with the atrocity of American education and the fact that Americans eat much larger portion sizes than is healthy AND that Americans have shit like hamburgers and milk embedded in their culture, is it really that surprising?
