You insert the quarter to unlock it.
It doesn't leave the slot and when you put it back, it lets go of the quarter.
It's not storing anything and it's certainly not a coin-operated shopping cart if that's what you meant.

It's actually pretty clever. You put a quarter into the slot to unlock the cart so you can use it. It 'holds' your quarter - you can't get it back. When you're done shopping, you have to decide if taking the cart back is worth the quarter. Because when you put the cart back and lock it back in place, it pops the quarter out.

At the very least, it makes the parking lots cleaner and safer by forcing people to coral their carts. Cheap people, anyway.

Bit of both, the staples are quite cheap so obviously it's great for impoverished students and poor people in general.
They have a few things in most lines that are really good though, some great chocolate, great cheeses, great cold meats. They have a range of European foods, mostly German, that you won't see anywhere else so they're also good if you like some continental delicacies.

I remember reading about Kroger’s testing out scanners you would take with you around the store, so that you could scan your items as you add them to your cart. Then instead of doing the whole self-checkout process, you just pay your total. This could maybe get simplified, but you'll probably still have something like Costco where they look at your receipt on the way out and do a quick assessment if the bags you're carrying seem about right for what it says.

I also saw someone recently testing a robotic shopping cart in a Target. I'm not sure what its purpose was exactly. He was just going around, loading up groceries into a little cart, but controlling the cart via remote.

Ameritards would be baffled to know that here in germany we have to pay a 25 cent deposit for each beverage can and bottle we purchase. You then have to bring the empty bottles back to the store where you throw them into a machine to get your money back. Poor people rummage through trashcans looking for eligible bottles and cans to get the deposit. We call those people 'bottle collectors'.

Returning and recycling glass bottles was actually a widespread thing in the usa. You can however blame corporations for using more and more single use containers rather than returnable ones.

Lidl has surpassed Aldi a long time ago, kind of a shame, only go when certain stuff(like the Mexican hotsauce and the American specials) are on offer.

Not him but yea
Depending on bottle it's either, 0.25, 0.15, and glass beer bottles are 0.08 and I think the plastic cases have a deposit of 2.50

Also depending on geographic location you may call them 'deposit collectors'
But if you do throw them away just be nice and leave them next to the bin(in my city we have small cages attached to bins for this reason)

The idea is to stop you from stealing trollies. As it turned out people were mostly willing to return a trolly in order to reclaim their dollar, so these are quite successful.
However the technology has been beaten. There are now, in some inner city supermarkets, trollies with wheels that only turn on certain surfaces; like the supermarket floor and not like footpaths or roads.

OK, so now all new carts work just as good as the shitty 5 year old carts with the one stuck wheel.

ours have transponders that lock the wheels outside the perimeter of the store.
It does fuckall, homeless people will push a cart that doesn't roll until it either starts to roll or they find a new one.
