I have (very) distant relatives in mexico city and they have private security despite living in a really good area. the cartels target wealthy people for kidnapping/ransom all the time.

It isn't. Baja California has Tijuana and Ensenada. Wine country of Mexico and beer country of Mexico. Tijuana is considered the best place to get tacos. Disappointed most of all, was in mexico for a handful of hours, lame tacos were alright, the meat was overcooked and salsa was kinda bland as in not enough salt
