Gin is also industrial ethanol and was from it's inception. Then juniper and flavors are added. It is an 'artificial' drink from day 1.
It's so damned good on a hot day, and the only refreshing spirit at all.
$10 gin is better than $25 whiskeys.

Appreciating the taste of liquor is very situation dependent, it's like anchovies or some other very strong tasting food/drink that works in its specific role and would be gross in most others.

tl;dr: It's distilled once instead of twice. Cognac is distilled twice. Armagnac is more flavorful because of this.
Cognac uses only Ugni Blanc grapes, whereas Armagnac uses four different grape types.
Armagnac is also a much better value because it's not nearly as memetic. You can get a 25 year old for around $70, and the kind of dark chocolate and dark dried fruit notes you'll get from it will be something you can't generally find in spirits at that price.

something else to note is that armagnac places a much higher value on vintage, whereas cognac is almost always a blend

armagnac is in effect double-distilled, but they use a hybrid pot-still-column-still setup that gets you better extraction and control while also proofing higher

cognac, especially the mass-produced stuff, places an emphasis on honey, warm spice, and toast, whereas armagnac is a little more reigned in and can have a much brighter fruitiness

Sweetest Canadian whisky I tried was Pike's Creek. It's a 100% corn mash so expect cloying levels of sweetness. I didn't much care for it but there's higher end stuff that was featured in the northern border collection.

Forty Creek has higher end bottles too, might be worth a look.

>"harsh" and "smooth" are examples of distinctive character
you draw this conclusion and yet there is no evidence that these are classified as distinctive characters in your own source
you're pulling claims that support your viewpoint out of your ass
something being distilled 7 times is also a distinctive character, prove me wrong
vodka proofed at 170 will have the distinctive character of more ethanol on the palate

Always wanted to try Pike Creek but for some reason never got around to it, will try to give it a shot before I leave. Also heard the Copper Pot Forty is exceptionally smooth, might be a good option for someone who normally drinks 70 proof """whiskey"""

I appreciate the suggestion but apparently bourbon is pretty common in Czech, they were pretty big on the stuff before Scotch started to move in on the market, so I'm trying to stick to something local they probably can't get there.

Then that isn't enforced because there are degrees of smoothness. Even bottom shelf vodka add vegetable glycerin to help smoothness, but are still harsh. More expensive vodka can also use glycerin. Fancy boys say it ruins the texture of vodka.

Because the scotch market is large / competitive and everyone is taking their shit seriously. You rarely see long age periods (>10 years), cask strength, barrel finishes and peat in other liquors.
Beer improves with age in a barrel, smokiness does work well. Only craft breweries bother.
Wine ages well in a barrel. Fortified wine ages even better (and have higher abv), but everything on the market is young.
Gin ages well in a barrel and is better at higher abv.
Rum does very well with more age (you rarely see over 10 years), high abv and wine cask finishes.
Tequila does well with peat. I haven't had anything finished or high proof, but I haven't been impressed by barrel aging.
Brandy calls 10 years extra old, I haven't seen anything high proof, barrel finishes work well.
I would like to try some barrel aged ciders but I've never seen it.

None of this is common. Why?

Sorry in advance for the blogpost.
Recently tried Remy Martin Louis XIII cognac.
It’s about $4,000 a bottle.
Definitely the most expensive liquor I’ve ever tasted. I believe a shot at a bar goes for about $280.
All of us who tried it agreed that it was pretty tasty but not worth the price tag. Price was not really a concern since it was a gift from a very wealthy family friend.
My point in posting is only that highest price does not necessitate best flavor. I personally enjoy laphroaig, balvenie, and lagavulin scotches the most. As for blends, monkey shoulder and blue label are also delicious but equally as tasty.
So that said, paying more than $200 for a bottle of booze is not something I would do. It’s just a fun tradition to break out an expensive bottle during a special occasion to celebrate. Also confession- when my friends are already plastered and want me to have them try some special scotch, I usually have a decanter of Seagrams or crown royal and they literally can’t tell what it is, so I’ll pour them a heavy dram and have them tell me all the tasting notes they get from “top shelf stuff, not sure what’s in here, may be a glenmorangie...you’ll have to tell me”

Just tell them it’s some 35yo $4,600 bottle and that their dram would cost $600+ dollars each at the bar. Free drinks for you the next several times you go out.

What placebo shit? Vegetable glycerin is added to plenty of vodka. It's sweet and thick, so it affects texture and helps with harshness of alcohol. You're not making sense.

12 year and up is big in bourbon. So is barrel proof. We have about as many options at my store as scotch and they're both given their own aisle, so that's a fuckton of bourbon and scotch.

Smokey old mezcal is also available. Tequila doesn't allow for smoke by the protected product rules. They're pretty strict about it usually. Gotta go for mezcal. It isn't peated, but the agave is charred while roasted.

Rum flavors can get really overshadowed by wood. The hot climate makes some rums over even 8 years unbalanced. There are good examples of extra old rum, but I often feel they'd be better off blended.

Oh, and rum moved to age and finish in France is a thing. Extra old rum that's been aged in France tends to be more balanced. I've had some wine barrel and brandy barrel finished rums. Unique is how I'd describe them. Not something I'd reach for every day.

>12 year and up is big in bourbon
I wouldn't say that, though I'm not American. There's really a lot less Bourbon than scotch available on the international market, especially if you don't count the reduced alcohol content versions. Not that it needs the extra age. Peat and sherry finishes would go over well though.

I have had a smokey mezcal, it was delicious. I've only ever seen the one though.

>rums over even 8 years unbalanced
Bundaberg (Australia, hot) makes some fantastic rums, all of them about 10 years old, and I must say they still taste young as a 10 year old scotch might. The best are beautiful spirits nonetheless, but I don't see rum as being too different in flavour profile from malt whiskey. Other NAS rums have been even worse in terms of youthful character.
As for being overshadowed by wood, the older rums I've tried have not been woodier than a typical bourbon.

>>13249049
I would be very keen to try some of that. It's not something I've ever seen.

I really don't see how you're drawing those distinctions.
Ardbeg and Lagavulin are bonfire and ash smoke respectively, which represents both ends of the spectrum.
Is it the base spirit you take issue with? Lagavulin is slightly nutty and Talisker's spice and brine?

I don't disagree with you that Ardbeg and Lagavulin are the best, but Laphroiag really isn't that different.

Also there are other, worse peated whiskeys. I'd probably place Ledaig and Caol Ila near the bottom (though I do still like them). Ardmore Legacy dead last.
