The point is a couple dollars to spare on a tip is nothing when you have a job and it's a lot more pleasant going through life knowing you've already taken care of the basic shit that's expected of you instead of trying to get away with doing as little as possible. There are a lot of things you could get away with not bothering to do, but if the gain of skipping these things is very little then it's generally less of a hassle just to go along with the social norms and not have the one in fifty interactions that finally comes up where someone gives you trouble over your undercutting.
