Anyone tried putting aeropress filters on their espresso puck? I tried it today and it was surprisingly solid. Strong but well extracted, with more evident sweetness than I usually get. Kept the shower head and filter basket clean too.

I use v60 filters cut to 58.4mm for the top almost every time. Slightly better water distribution, and (more importantly) keeps things so clean that I've never actually had anything to wipe off my screen when I drop it since I started using em. On occasion I'll use a Whatman 597 filter that fits the bottom perfectly right out of the box to do paper filtered espresso. It's really interesting, but too different to be an every-time kind of thing.

>>13158728
It's not really much more or less versatile than any other brewer. It's just the steps FEEL more different than changes with similarly effect in other methods. It does have a immersion+percolation mode as well as a just percolation mode, but so do multiple other brewers (Clever, Bonavita Immersion, Hario Switch). Not that it's a bad brewer or "hipster dogshit" by any means, it's mostly just one of many perfectly competent devices.

I like percolators for camping. Pretty retard proof, it's basically a kettle with the internal stem/coffee holder assembly. Hard to break, easy to maintain and use.

Hotel's probably serving you something that can be brewed quick like a K pod, or is pouring hot water over an espresso shot for an americano.
Use an insulated cup or thermos to keep your brew hotter longer, and either pick a fast brewing method or pony up for an insulated french press or something.

Also bear in mind this practice can and has lead to 3rd degree burns:

Is there a name for adding a bit of water to an espresso, like a short americano? I’m talking like a 1:1 or even 3:1 ratio of espresso:water.

I’m the m47anon, I’ve had it for a few weeks now. It’s honestly a terrific grinder, I’ve been drinking the best coffee I’ve ever had in my life. I was going to get the Phoenix but I decided to just spend the money I was planning to put towards a Sette 270wi and get the best build quality I could. It’s an incredibly solid piece of kit.
Pros:
>quiet
>fast and easy to grind
>very consistent
>incredibly easy to take apart and clean or realign
Cons:
>I’ve had a coffee fine get into the ball bearing up top making the handle turn less smoothly, but it was easy to wipe with a cloth
>honestly pretty annoying to learn the proper grind settings for everything, I had to experiment a lot as the grinder’s springs broke in
>if you make a lot of coffee back to back, it’s a lot of grinding (like dialling in espresso). Also, light roast coffees are kind of difficult to grind.

I live in an area that gets lots of power outages from storms (hurricanes basically) so the idea of a good, reliable hand grinder is really appealing to me. I have no big complaints, and plenty of praise for it.

It’s not exactly hard to grind, just feels a bit rough and “crunchy”, depending on how light the roast is you’ll need to put a bit of effort into it. By comparison, darker roasts grind almost entirely effortlessly, with a smooth steady grinding. The only time I’ve really had issue was with a particularly light roasted coffee that was so lightly roasted (under roasted, imo) that it had a strong peanut flavour.
Most other “light roasts” with developed taste have been fine.

Pourover is a pain in the ass.
You can't just dump your water in and let it brew, you need to stand over it and slowly pour water in, making sure to distribute it evenly but not get water along the edges where it will bypass the coffee and just seep directly down the filter. You also have to dial in your grind so that this process takes -exactly- 4 minutes, no more and no less.

Press meanwhile can be left on its own while you do other shit.

I'm new to the whole coffee thing, was sick of spending $5 a day on mcdonalds iced coffees when i could just make it at home with one of my mums french presses.

So today i followed a video on how to make coffee in a french press. i followed, and put about a handfull of coffee i had just ground into a jar into the french press. I then put some boiling water in it and let it sit for 4mins the lid on. Poured it in a glass, added milk and a teaspoon of coffee syrup, took a sip and it almost tastes like plain milk with a tiny hint of coffee. The colour of the coffee is like the average colour a coffee would be, maybe slightly pale but not too bad

My question is, how come a handful of coffee (i would say around 1/3cup) is weaker than 2 teaspoons of instant coffee? Did i do something wrong? I added about half a cup of milk and half (to about a full) cup of coffee.

Measure the beans by weight. There is a specific ratio of coffee beans to water you need.
>I then put some boiling water in it and let it sit for 4mins
You need to wet the coffee first. Pour in just enough water to soak through the grounds and let it sit for 20 seconds. If your coffee is fresh then at this point it should bubble up quite nicely. Then pour the rest of your water in and give it a little stir before letting it sit.

okay thanks. I got it tasting nice. Now my second question is... how do they get the mcdonalds coffees so cold so quick? I know i could cold brew and leave it for 12 hours etc etc and get a nice cold brew. But say i want it like 20mins before work? Even if i stuck it in the freezer it would take about 15mins to get cold enough

It's more forgiving and less versatile. Anecdotally I've preferred brews from the v60 slightly and found them more nuanced.

As for method, start with around 20g coffee ground medium to medium coarse. Pour 60g of water to bloom, and give it a stir. Then pour over about 40 seconds up to 340g total water.

Quite fine grind.
I'm not sure why this coarse grind meme took hold so well, but it's wrong, and wasteful. It's likely you'll get a weak cup at 1:16 and a coarse grind. The extraction might be ok, but it's likely that you've left most of the coffee in the inner layers of the large particles.

For corroboration,as I know my grind advice is counter to nearly all info on the net:

Espresso shots are meant for quick consumption, yes. A ristretto is the shortest and is just the very first water that hits the grains and flows out of the machine. Italian coffee purists often drink this as it has a minimal amount of water.
A longer press with more water is essentialy an americano, a watered down espresso shot.

not him, but i'm in NA and i slowly went from milky drinks to drinking straight espresso. as my palate refined. pretty much went latte>cappucino>flat white/gibralto>espresso over a period of a few years. A latte isn't a cappuccino. That's why I asked. Lattes are common in north america. Cappuccinos (actual cappuccinos not Gloria Jean's idea of a cappuccino which is just coffee with whipped cream) are about as common as a macchiato. Walk into your local blue bottle or whatever passes for a hip coffee chain in your area, and ask. They'll confirm this.
