As others have said, Dr Pepper has a cherry, prune, sort of taste. That 23 on the can refers to the number of flavorings in the old recipe. I'm pretty sure Dr Pepper is older than Coke too. 7-up is also older than Sprite, but it's a lot more crisp and sharp tasting. It does well in mixing drinks.

Yes, the whole Mr. Pibb getting killed off and replaced with Pibb Xtra thing in 2001 was specifically because Coca-Cola began doing distribution for Dr Pepper and didn't want to compete against their own products by proxy. Pibb Xtra was intentionally designed to taste like very low quality minimal effort store brand soda to kneecap the Pibb brand without getting rid of it altogether in a way that would've drew more attention to it.
tl;dr Pibb Xtra is trash and we will never get to taste real Mr. Pibb again (closest you have is shitty Pibb Xtra mislabeled as Mr. Pibb on soda fountains which might trick someone suggestible enough into imaginung it's better than it is).

I've used a crockpot bbq pulled pork recipe that uses a ltr of dr. pepper a couple of times. it is absolute suffering and agony for the first few hours. smells and tastes like soap. but once the color leaves the liquid, we drain it then add bbq sauce, leaving the pork glazed by it. it gives it a bourbon chicken kinda taste. quite interesting.
