Can someone explain why many layered dips are so loved? The only advantage I see are that its more portable and that there's less dishes to clean. In any other case isn't it better to just have all the different parts of the dip separated so people can portion and select what they like and you don't have to deal with anything rotting at the bottom of a big bowl?

It's a presentation novelty. It's colorful and makes dip, which usually looks like a pile of homogeneous glop, look not only presentable but almost festive or pretty. logistics wise it's actually kind of a shitty way to dip because you can't get everything in one bite.
