Kipperrd herring is also nice, but doesn't have as broad a range of nutrients.
Also, you can get non-cured anchovies and they are even milder than sardines, with similar nutrition.

I get the tomato ones as a treat, because they're 2 or 3p more than the ones in sunflower oil and are less versatile. The sunflower oil ones are great because there's usually so much oil in there you can keep using it for days

Small fish do not generally have mercury or contamination issues. I recommend the smallest "bristling" sardines, but any sardines are nutritionally awesome.
Maybe you are thinking of tuna. If you love tuna, I recommend the smaller skipjack tuna. Albacore tuna are huge and unfortunately somewhat contaminated (they move up the food chain as they grow larger), but they are still safe to eat if you don't eat them all the time. Tuna sushi is delicious if you're willing to pay top dollar for those cuts.

And since you're looking to try new things, you might enjoy kippers or smoked oysters too. The smoking process dimishes the fishy flavor which some people find offputting.

It's Chicken of the Sea, canned in water. Their tuna is fine for my tastes. I don't like the oil. I hope the sardines are edible because I'm scared of bones and slime texture.
>smoked oysters
Are they slimy and raw like regular oysters? I've had smoked salmon and trout that I caught with my dad back in the day so smoked fish is pretty good. What's the difference between kippers and sardines? Same tiny fish low on the food chain? I stopped eating tuna more than once a week because of mercury.

>Chicken of the Sea, canned in water.

Oof. God be with you. I predict you'll hate them but you never know.

Smoked oysters aren't slimy at all. The cooking process eliminates those slimy juices and shrinks them down so in the end they're small and pretty firm. One part of a smoked oyster is kinda crumbly, the other part is more chewy.

Kippers are bigger fish and are always smoked. They're usually filleted, with less skin than you'll see on whole sardines. I specify whole sardines because "skinless and boneless" sardines are getting popular and I'm not talking about those. Compared to whole sardines, the flesh of kippers is also firmer - some sardines can be borderline mushy.

>> No.13183392

>>13183382
Is it that bad? I promise I won't write off sardines if this tin is bad and will look for one of the brands I see in the thread. Where would I get smoked oysters? I don't think I've ever seen them in stores but I suppose I've never looked. Kippers sound up my alley.

Also, I just remember I tried pickled herring in a wine sauce. The fish itself was good but the wine sauce made me sick to my stomach. Too sweet. I also hate sweet relish so it makes sense.

>> No.13183399

>>13183392
Chicken of the Sea is a bargain brand, and sardines in water are much less popular than sardines in oil. They're fine if you're only in it for the health benefits and just don't want to be bothered with extra calories, but most people consider them less tasty than oil-packed sardines. For a first-time taster, they'll probably be kinda gross, sorry.
