most of the wordplay in Shakespeare only works when spoken with a Yosemite Sam accent. the English accent really has degraded and the conventional American Southern accent is descended from what it used to be

American Southern accent slows it down so much that they sound genuinely retarded.
Anyway, the Original Pronunciation sounds nothing like American Southern even spoken at a normal speed. Southern drawl descends from a foppish, upper class accent as befits people who could afford to come to the New World and set up large slave plantations and OP is a more down and dirty sound, if anything the closest modern equivalent is a silly pirate accent.
Shakespearean actors are generally instructed to speak an a more Scottish accent for best balance of pun pronunciation and not sounding like clowns.

It's called a west country accent, and you're right, it's the closest. The pirate accent's based on some faggot actor's accent (he came from the west country).
