Most recent bottle for me, Escondite del Ardacho 'Las Guillermas', a very limited production (2075 bottles) single-vineyard rioja from a really neat producer. 40% viura, 60% tempranillo. Really cool stuff, a quite unusual mix and balance of deep flavors from the tempranillo and prolonged aging in older oak barrels, and brightness from the viura.

Do you have some reason to believe that the wines consumed by the Romanovs in 1850 were similar to the ones being produced today? Because I tend to assume that pretty much any wine that isn't made in an ultra-indigenous style (like that Qvevri wine from Georgia) is going to have changed quite a bit over a few hundred years for a variety of reasons, inb4 404

>> No.12931034

>>12930995
It's probably different, for sure, but the grape varieties and climate are the same, and the winemaking is often still pretty traditional. Chapoutier for instance is biodynamic (so the farming techniques are not far removed from what they were back then), and still uses primarily older, larger casks for fermentation and aging (in this case 600L demi-muids, only 10% new). I'm not trying to say they're 100% the same thing as back then but they're still made in a certain style and using varieties and methods that are similar if not the same. Also clay amphorae/qvevri and such are from WAY before the time of the Romanovs, wine making 150 years ago wasn't so different from now as that (although I do get that it's just an example).

I fucking hate the vanilla smell of new world pinot noir. Even when they say it's "minimally oaked", I get one whiff and it makes me gag. Australia, NZ, and ZA are just all around writeoffs as far as I'm concerned. It's always "oh it's not all yellow tail", well sure, but that doesn't mean it's good. Sorry.

I like SOME zinfandels from California, sonoma and santa cruz AVA. Fuck their pinot noir with a flaming MIRV and fuck the lodi zins, and most of the "napa zins" which I am fairly certain are made of trucked in lodi fruit and just relabeled fraudulently. Finger Lakes makes good gewurtz, riesling, pinot gris, gamay, and pinot noir. It's hit or miss, but when it's good it punches above its weight price wise.

South america can be good if you can avoid the bargain-basement stuff. I can't remember the name but it was a whole cluster PN concrete-tank fermented, never touched oak, from chile. Honestly that's how the stuff should be made. I don't know what the obsession with oaking PN is all about, it ruins it. I guess it's alright if you use neutral and I mean FUCKING NEUTRAL oak but only French people seem to know how to do that.

I also like torrontes.

Larger wine shops sometimes discount lower to mid range wines that are reaching the end of their optimum drinking window. You can expect maybe 25% off the RRP in such cases. For a while I was sucking down bottles of just past its prime langhe wines for a song and dance. Bordeaux and rhones people will just buy blindly because they heard it’s good, so those are less often found like that but it’s not unheard of.. more often for frog wines you see it with stuff that should not have much age, especially loire reds, but sometimes you will find a languedoc wine that’s pretty old going for very little

I might be guilty of liking oaky fruit bombs for sure but the label and name isn't what I go for, consciously at least. Around here all the wine sold has a independent description of smell, taste and food pairings on the shelf so I just tend to pick something with similar description of wines I've liked before.

I think it was a Zinfadel that had "less tannins" that I tried on a whim but it was godawful atrocious. Just as bad as low alcohol wines.

Bought some wines to cellar the other day:

2013 Roberto Sarotto Barbaresco Riserva
Nebbiolo - Piedmont, Italy
Was invited to a tasting by the winemaker's son. Their wines weren't too exciting but very good value. The Barbaresco was the most elegant of the wines on tasting and from a great vintage in the Langhe.

2015 Monchiero Barolo
Nebbiolo - Piedmont, Italy
Dark, rich and chocolatey. Lots of dead roses. Had this at another tasting of mainly wines from Alto Piemonte (up north) even though this is a more southern wine, but that's what I was in the mood for.

2017 Pierre Gonon Les Iles Feray
Syrah - Ardeche, France
Haven't tried this wine but one of my colleagues was impressed by its elegance and complexity (also I'm kinda into her even though she's taken). I generally like wines from the northern Rhone and this is just outside that.

2015 Cantina del Signore Il Puto Gattinara
Nebbiolo (Spanna in local dialect) - Piedmont, Italy
More red fruited and light bodied than wines from down south, this was a lot of fun at tasting. Still has that very strong Nebbiolo tannin though.

Ask yourself if they sound like a car salesman or a real estate agent or someone who's actually interested in what they're selling.

Plus if you ask them what they like they're more likely to show you well priced wines rather than something that's potentially overpriced.

I really don't think sales reps are encouraged to upsell anyway and most people in wine are truly passionate about it.

I prefer wines with less alcohol, less oak influence and less extraction for red wines (time spent on skins) and more extraction for white wines.

I'm from Australia but I prefer old world wines/old world winemaking styles. I'm a fan of Syrah (same grape as Shiraz) but Syrah in the Australian context implies cooler climate and more delicate wines made from the same grape.

I've never made wassail before, or whatever you want to call brandy + fruit + spice. I want to make some for family events this winter and I want to start nailing a recipe now. Does anyone have suggestions on a good starting place for a semisweet wassail where the bite is even between the brandy and the spices? Looking online I see a lot of recipes that are like "use super fruity brandy and then fuck it with cloves" and others have basically 0 cloves or allspice and just use a bunch of cinnamon. Idk I just don't know where to start so looking for someone who's made it before

I really don't trust anything around the 3.5-3.7 mark because usually are mediumly priced wines that are inflated by plebs who never really went above anything in that tier
unless it's fucking cheap, that is
from 3.7 and upwards the rating tends to be more consistent and trustworthy

You'd think that Australians would like acidic, refreshing wines due to the climate. Things are actually heading in that direction, but traditionally people just usually drink what grows nearest to them.

In a cupboard above the fridge In the kitchen. Along with them was an ancient bottle of baileys and briefly a bottle of brandy I put there when I found them.

Oh and they’re mostly reds with a couple of whites I think. I can get pictures of them if you want

>I can get pictures of them if you want
Sure, why not.

It's fine to store them there if the temperature in your kitchen is constant throughout the year, but I'm guessing it probably isn't. They might be ok if they haven't been subjected to much heat or the temperature change has been gradual.

Well as gradual as cooking and the ac dying in summer.

Also I was wrong, a few are almost as old as I am, and the big one at the end is the only one older than I am (not sure if it was bottled 1984 or 1996, you’ll see) has some stuff on the back ima post
