Just american poverty food. Fried chicken, collard greens, mac and cheese, cornbread. Basically making the best out of cheap cuts and produce. It's good comfort food, but it's not some amazing culinary feat, but most americans black, white, brown, whatever cling to any sense of identity they can since it usually gets washed away in our "melting pot" of a culture

Much of what I grew up on would be called soul food and I'm not black.

There's a story about a couple of white guys going into a soul food restaurant in the Dallas area a few years ago. The owner of the restaurant was a big fan of jazz and had pictures of a number of old time jazz musicians around the restaurant.

When they walked in, he looked at him and said "What do you white guys think you are doing coming in here?"

One of the white guys was as big a fan of jazz music as the owner, which was why he wanted to go there. He pointed to each picture in turn and correctly identified the identities of the jazz musicians in the pictures.

When he got done, the owner had changed his tune and asked, "And what can I get for you fine gentlemen?"
