We get a whole pig once or twice a year from a local farmer. We select the pig when it's still very young and get to visit it and see it grow up, feeding it the occasional treat etc.
I know my porkchops were not kept in cages, and that suits me just fine.
Sadly, sometimes I do buy supermarket meat that was probably raised that way. If the bacon is on sale or whatever. I'm no saint.

They are specifically selling us ground 90/10 meat. I'll ask them what they do with the other cuts, I believe they would sell them but they might also sell them to a butcher nearby for sale. Not sure, I haven't actually met these farmers yet, they are friends of my parents. I do have an extra freezer that still has some of last summer's hog in it. I don't hunt, but people around here give away venison through the winter too.

The Texas longhorn breed exists today, basically because they survived so well, in the wild (they're a hybrid of survivors, not a natural breed. The buffalo can survive easily from northern Canada into Mexico (if we didn't wipe them out etc) and specialty breeds like the Highlander cows can presumably survive along with the buffalo anywhere.
