I'm sure eating foods with added sugar that didn't before doesn't exactly help, but most people could probably maintain a healthy weight or overweight but not obese weight if they just ate normal sized portions and stopped drinking soda/energy drinks/juice. Also drinking culture doesn't help. The low-fat but higher sugar fad also started catching on around then which ends up being less filling and easier to consume too many calories. Fast food, restaurants/eating out in general, willingness to eat out often, and convenience meals were sharply increasing in popularity, too. More women entering the workforce also meant fewer home cooked meals from scratch. Eating processed convenient junk in general, even if it doesn't have hfcs or other sugar added, makes it difficult to maintain a healthy weight.
