Anyone started a grease fire before? How'd it go? Did you burn your tendies and your house down or did you get it under control?

I was doing some bubble and squeak tonight out of a bunch of veggies in my fridge that were due to expire soon. I'd steamed them and mashed them all together, and then heated up a large frying pan with about a centimetre of sunflower oil in it. I was tired and on autopilot, usually I put more thought into what I'm doing.

1. Too much oil. I don't know what I was thinking.
2. The mashed veggies had a very high water content, I should've let them sit in the strainer for 10 minutes
3. I let the oil sit there heating up for too long

I dropped my first patty in the oil and fwoosh, fucking fire blasting out of the pan, I stood there looking at it like a retard for what felt like an eternity. It's weird how the dumb lizard part of your brain when confronted with giant flames starts screaming at you to throw water on it, even though you logically know this is a fucking terrible idea. I turned off the stove, grabbed a dry towel, threw it on and then let it cool for a while.

I assume some of you have had experiences with fires before?

did the dry towel catch on fire?
I never had a grease fire, but I keep the lid of my pot next to my pot.

Pic related, there's a light brown circle on the towel but apart from that it pretty much instantly put out the fire. I remember as a child growing up in bongistan that the fire brigade would always put out PSAs telling you to throw a towel over chip pan fires - I never thought that information would come in useful.

My pot collection is poverty tier, so I only have one big lid, and it has a glass window in the centre that would likely break if exposed to a fire.

Thanks for the info.
I didnt think a dry towel would be effective.
I started a fire once in my kitchen.
I was steaming some stuff at the lowest heat. The heating coil was shit so it was way too hot.
The water evaporated and once I lifted the lid fire came out. I put the lid back on and turned off the oven. The pot was ruined.

Just put the lid on it and it goes out.

i was trying to figure out what cockney rhyming slang was responsible for "bubble and squeak" but no, it's just literally called that. fucking bongs.
