Unironically the most based hobby. Good exercise. Fresh air. Free, delicious food.

I actually live within walking distance of woodland, but I don't forage because:

Pretty ignorant comment desu. Picking mushrooms does not harm the host mycelium. In fact some studies show that disturbing the soil next to the fruiting body by picking the mushroom actually HELPS the mycelium.

Now, if you wanna talk about overharvesting ramps or fiddleheads sure. That’s a totally different ballgame.

This is a stupid attitude. The chanterelles at my local grocery store were shipped in from
Bulgaria. (I’m on the west coast of Canada). They cost $25 per pound. So if you wanna go strictly for cost that’s about $650 of chanterelles in the OP. But there are other species as well that you just can’t buy at the grocery store. Sucks to be you to only ever get to eat things that came from a grocery store, and never get to enjoy the finer things in life.

Yeah it kinda does. You gotta fry them first in lots of fat (I use butter) and then vac pack to freeze. Even still they are no where near as good as fresh. But you could use them in meat pies, or something like that.

The way most people take mushrooms does not benefit the host. Usually people rip them out of the ground or cut them off a tree completely, leaving nothing left. At least that's the case for chaga around me I just assume it's the same with most other fungi. Improperly removing them is fairly common
