i like the sauce mixed in, my girlfriend doesnt. typically at an italian american family event or maybe even just sunday dinner for some italians, the pasta itself would be in one bowl or the pot only tossed with just barely enough of the sauce to coat it and people would plate it and put as much of the actual sauce they want on top. pasta isnt a one size fits all kindof thing, it was really designed to fill up a big ass family for cheap and carry little bits of actual flavorful food to your mouth on a payload of cheap filling carbs.

everyone itt try ceccio e pepe. the cheapest, and single best pasta dish ive ever had. ive payed upwards of 60$ for a pasta dish alone at fine italian restaurants in several states, homemade ceccio e pepe blows it all out of the water. simplicity is infinitely complex. its basically to pasta as bechamel is to french sauces.
