You can get an idea of how other countries think of "American food" by looking at the "American" labeled products they produce.
There's definitely a collection of food products that constitute "American" in the same way we all understand in the US what constitutes "Chinese food."
Of course in both cases the respective members of the nation being represented in these food products will exclaim how not like their real food those products are. But there's some legitimate basis for how those ideas came to be. They're kind of like the Disney-fied, fun house mirror caricatures of real American food and real Chinese food.

Fundamentally it's not a terrible idea, but it was created in a corporate test kitchen to sell canned soup. It is horribad and I have to keep my mouth shut about it around certain family members come holiday time, too. I thought it would die out with the ones who seemed to embraced it the most, as sad as it is to see them die. But no such luck. Their kids picked up on that shit as bad as the candied yams with marshmallows. I've said it before and I'll say it again: the 20th Century was brutal on American food.
