>What are some good whiskeys for a complete whiskey noob, trying to transition from mostly beers to some more hard alcohol.

I'd recommend Four Roses or Maker's Mark. They're both bourbons (which is still a whiskey, just like Scotch, Irish whiskey, Tennessee whiskey, etc.), so they're made, primarily, from corn, making them a little sweeter. Four Roses has a slightly lower ABV than most whiskeys and, while it's still strong, that's enough to take away some of the initial bite. Maker's Mark uses a fair amount of wheat in their recipe and that results in a slightly smoother product, as well. Both are readily available and affordable.

Go to a bar and try everything.
You'll want to try a cheap Bourbon, a rye whiskey, a Speyside Scotch, an Islay scotch (with you will either love or hate) and something finished in a sherry barrel.
If you buy a bottle and finish it every month or two you'll quit before finding anything you like.

>bedposter
>always buy the good stuff
Welp. I do spend way too much time in bed, and half the time what I buy is pretty random. I actually had a couple single barrel bourbons in mind which they didn't have, but the Four Roses was on sale as a staff pic and I knew it was a smart buy, and the George Dickel I honestly bought because the last guy who made a whiskey thread posted it. I looked it up and read reviews and tasting notes in the store, and am actually really happy with the purchase; it's a really decent budget whiskey and I'd honestly buy it again over Jack any day of the week. I haven't tried the vodka yet, and I usually just buy Seagram's for everyday drinking, but it was also a staff pic and was on sale for cheaper so I thought I'd give it a try, however nauseating the USA! USA! crap on the label is.

I know this isn't a beer thread, but I saw this Stone and had to give it a try. Pic related is the last time I tried a POG beer, and I just had to buy it when I saw it in the store. I literally went to Hanalei School, played on the Hanalei pier as a child (and pretty much learned how to swim in Hanalei Bay), loved POG, played POGs, and love IPAs... Well it was shit. Stone is kind of hit or miss on their experimental stuff, but a POG Berliner Weisse already sounds better than a fruit IPA. Maybe I'll report back later with my impressions, if anyone cares.

Bourbon: Evan Williams Black Label for a "standard" bourbon, Maker's Mark for a wheated bourbon, Old Grand-Dad, Old Grand-Dad Bottled in Bond or Old Grand-Dad 114 (preferably the latter) for a high-rye bourbon.
Scotch: Glenlivet 12, Glenfiddich 12 or Glenmorangie The Original for something light and delicate. Laphroaig 10 or Ardbeg 10 for something peaty. Macallan 12 for something sherried.
These are all super-representative of their respective styles as well as inexpensive; Macallan 12 is the most expensive bottle here at ~$55.

I've moved around quite a bit, and try all the vodkas. It's pretty rare to find a drinkable handle at $10. The only thing near me now at that price point is TJ's Vodka of the Gods, which I just don't like. I usually buy Seagram's for ~$13, and those extra three bucks are nothing for the difference in quality.

You just need to know which bottlers to buy from but most stuff at retail from Diageo and independents like Signatory, Douglas Laing, Cadenhead's, etc. are mostly legit. buy a bottle and see what you think if you can afford it without it being a hardship.
i don't think you're really missing out, but you might find that you love it.
and this is the advice i'd give about any whiskey that you're attracted to. buy it and try it. most of the opinions here are not my kind of opinions and a large portion of them are just trolls anyway

In my case, with the Nectar D'Or, it was due to sauternes casks which had been sterilized with sulphur candles, so my bottle of scotch tastes like rotten eggs.
Also, there's two kinds of sulphur in scotch:
- Naturally occurring sulphur. This can be desirable. This tends to taste "meaty." Examples: Glendronach, Mortlach
- Sulphur from sulphur candles. This is typically found in some whiskies that are aged in sherry casks, but it can happen with other cask types too, like sauternes. This is not desirable. This tastes like rotten eggs.

There you go. Vodka that does inherit some of the flavor of its original mash can still be called vodka, as long as that flavor not too pronounced. Spirits have to be submitted to the TTB for testing before they'll approve your recipe or approve your labeling to identify your spirit as a Vodka or Gin, etc. If the tester thinks your vodka is neutral enough they'll give you a pass because they honestly don't give a fuck about vodka submissions.

Large brands will of course be indistinguishable from each other. Removing any trace of flavor is important for their consistency.

Not him, but single casks are overrated. When they're good, they're good. When they're not, well, you get the idea. They can be quite singular, for obvious reasons. Blending different casks allows for more variety of flavour, and for any flaws to be ironed out. As an aside, cognacs don't use single casks s such. Generally, they use vintages or age statements. Both work well. Vintages often include older liquid than the year stated, age statements allow for a mix of old and young liquid, which can help freshen up any woodyness.
