A friend of mine from elementary school was born to a poor family. His dad was a disabled vet and mom was a housewife and between the two of them they barely ever had any money. Lots of children, and the older ones worked part time min wage jobs to support the whole family. None of them were fat or obese because they didn't buy cheap premade dinners; they lived off bare necessities and stretched their budget as far as they could creating scratchmade meals. Contrast this to my mother-in-law's family who is your typical trailer park trash. Able-bodied and capable of working yet can never hold a job more than 3 months and blames everyone else for her not having enough money and routinely being evicted because she refuses to pay rent. The day her EBT card arrives in the mail, it's off to the grocery store to stock up on everything unhealthy imaginable. There's no long term thinking or committment for them, just buy up whatever they can with whatever money they can and cram the freezer full of whatever they can get in the frozen food section. Both her and her daughter are severely overweight and have high blood pressure.

I was a 'splashpark guard' which is like a county lifeguard but there's no actual pool, just a little concrete splashy area in a ghetto park surrounded by homeless people that I had to open, close, and manage myself 6 days a week all summer. I dealt with a lot of poor people there and I respected some of them (mostly mexicans because they actually go to work and used the public grills to cook their own food for their families) but a lot of them were a major pain in my ass. I do it because I tell myself its faster and easier to do than cooking. I don't have a lot of time when I get home from work, and I wanna spend it doing what I want, so I tend to just buy something I can wang in the oven, so I can play games for 30/45 minutes, then I pull it out, eat it, and I'm done.

Plus, I guess I kinda struggle cooking because of my setup. I have a small flat that isn't big enough for an oven, so I use one of those countertop "convection" ovens I think it's called? About the size that fits a normal sized frozen pizza in it. The hobs on top are electric, and pitiful, so if I want to do like, a stirfry, it takes literally 3 times as long to cook the food. I've made a curry once that took 45 minutes, when the recipe said it'd take 15, simply because my hobs don't get hot enough.

So that's my take I guess lads. Being able to wang something in the oven, leave it, and have it be done is very easy, and non-time-consuming. I know the food is low quality.
