I don't consider boiled fish such a ritual in Wisconsin, but the fish fry is like church for some people. Fish fry I think has its roots in Lent for Catholics (at least in the Upper Midwest) but I've noticed that it's not just a Lent thing since I moved to Milwaukee.

I lived in Ohio for a while. While in many ways it was my least favorite of the flyovers, the one thing I appreciated was that at least they had no illusions that the place was a goddamm dump, and that made it actually kind of agreeable. I am not in the business of insulting the locals wherever I may live (at least while I'm still there), but when the topic of my opinions came up obliquely, people were mostly pretty realistic about what Ohio was and wasn't. Contrast that with say Minnesota where they think they're fucking Switzerland or something.

As a child my parents dragged my ass along to lame summer vacations here.
Its really a series of quaint gay little gift shops, antiques, trinkets and nick knacks. Ordinary food, fudge shops, stupid little lighthouse from 100 years ago. Walk on the rocky beach and get mosquito bites and ticks. Crappy motel rooms. Yes the obligatory fish boil, its not great, its fucking boiled fish and potatoes. That was back in the 80s, Im surprised millennials and zoomers are following Gen X and Boomers to the same boring places. I guess its one of the only places in driving range, when you live in Chicago, Milwaukee, its either here, or the Dells. Both a cringy tourist traps on par with Branson, Missouri.
