Moneys a bit tight right now, and I'm sick of eating grilled cheeses and pb&js. Feel like mixing things up a bit. Anyone got any strange but tasty dishes that can be made with relatively cheap ingredients?

Meat-wise anything made out of the less-used organs of animals or other undesirable parts is usually cheap.

i.e. stomach, intestines, pigs feet, etc.

pork shoulder is pretty cheap (5lb for $12 or so) and you can braise it to make pulled pork or carnitas. Not sure why it's cheap, probably just because of the high fat content.

I also recommend making fermented food like saurkraut because it's cheap and it tastes good, and eating a decent amount of carbs from potatoes and other stuff, lots of beans and rice.

The cheapest veggies are shit like cabbage, luckily there are a lot of cabbage based recipes... etc

to be really honest - lacto fermentation is a very good example of this
I buy 1.5kg swedes for 40p each, julienne or grate them then jar with caraway seeds and salt, and leave for a few weeks - the flavour is pretty salty and sour and nicely funky and goes well in salad or sandwiches

this also
buying a big bag of offal and learning to prepare it and make it beautiful is one of the most rewarding things I've done in a kitchen

Poached egg on a toasted bread.
Put spices you like on it.
