The coffee I got is preground so I can't fix that; its very fine. However, I figured out how to get it to brew well. If i make a small slit in the grounds with a butter knife all the way to the bottom, it allows the steam to come up better. That way it doesn't brew too slow.

An espresso is a concentrated coffee extract. You can get more concentrated in the form of ristretto, but let's not complicate things. Just know that there are more options if you want to get down to it. Now lots of people enjoy it in that concentrated form. Other people dilute it with steamed milk. That is a latte, or a cappuccino if it made less frothy then topped with pure froth and a sprinkling of powdered chocolate. Then there is the americano, which is an espresso expanded to the size of a mug by dilution with hot water. This takes the espresso and makes it resemble a coffee made by other means. By itself it is what you would probably think of as a black coffee. Sometimes people also add a splash of milk to make it resemble what you probably think of as a white coffee.

Just kind of weird that I can take my grind all the way to cold brew coarseness and it takes the same time as a far finer grind which leads me to believe it's an issue with the filters because I didn't start having this happen until I picked up the circles instead of the squares but that doesn't seem to make sense. Quick question but am I a pleb for always ordering iced coffee instead of “cold brew”? Just about every coffee place I go to in the area has both as separate menu items. Iced coffee is cheaper by $1-2 usually and maybe I’m a tastelet but I don’t notice much of a difference despite not using cream usually. What do you guys think? Is cold brew superior for the way it’s “cold brewed” instead of “hot brewed then chilled” because I really don’t give a fuck.

Pic hardly related, just a yelp image of an iced coffee and hopefully something else from my favorite coffee shop.

Cold brew is a brewing method. Iced coffee is a serving method. That is, iced coffee is hot brewed coffee served on ice. Cold brew coffee can be served hot if desired. This is simply semantics.

For the purposes of your question (since you only want coffee served cold), what this comes down to is the flavor profile stemming from the brewing method. Cold brew is going to be stronger with less bitterness and less caffeine. It costs more because they have to make it in batches a day ahead of time, as opposed to the hot brew coffee which can be made on demand. And perhaps just because they can charge more.

If you don't care about coffee and just want a cold drink and some caffeine, get the iced coffee. Especially if you put a bunch of syrup and such in it. But if you are going to drink it black, consider the cold brew.

Never used the electric ones, but the ones I have seen seem to use a plastic top portion, and plastic and hot liquids is a no for me. You might also not have as much control over the brew method like you would with a stove top one, and would take up more space than a stove top one.
>its up stairs and shared, worth it?
That's up to you. I love the strong faux espresso brew that my moka makes. You would need to allow for 5-10 minutes of stove top time, as you need to set it to medium heat and let it warm up. You can prepare the hot water and fill the funnel while you let the stove heat.

The main disadvantage over the other options is that you need to make sure your grounds are a appropriate size as they directly affect the brewing process. If you are cheap like me, you can get decent but inexpensive beans ground at the grocery store for free so they are the right size.

You can either see if you like moka pots by buying a cheap 3 cup one at the grocery store from the ethnic section(at least in Publix they are) or dive in and get a $30 Biallati which are nicer built in my experience. They also come in a variety of styles from original silver octagon to colors like mine is(mines the Italian import). The video link goes over the best way to brew moka.

Pic related. 30% robusta, the rest is arabica. Its not the most amazing coffee, and some of the flavor is gone after being opened for so long, but its interesting. When first opened it had flavors like camphor. For some reason reminded me of pepper trees being cut; though not in a shitty way since those trees are garbage. Now it kinda tastes a little woody, hints of dry cocoa, and some slighty sweet acid from the arabica. Not the best coffee, but its interesting.

You want your stuff to taste good but if there’s no reason to consume it then why the fuck would you unless you’re either A.) a fatass or B.) need to suck on something when there’s no dicks present? I suppose you are at least getting some water intake when you drink decaf coffee, but it’s pathetic how many grown ass adults can’t bring themselves to drink plain water and need their $6 cold brew and their mommy to wipe their ass so they don’t dehydrate.

What I do is preheat electric HOB on medium heat and leave it there till brewing is done. I put in boiling water in the bottom and immediately put it on the stove. I watch the brew speed and depending on factors take it off either right before it starts to fountain or right as it does, and run cold water on the pot. I immediately pour into mug. Pouring hot water into is best cause it limits the time on the stove which limits the chance of burning the coffee.

They're not that bad. Also they're relatively fresh. I used some beans from local and foreign roasteries but they were like 35€ to 50€ the kilo and the taste, although being better didn't justify the expense. Also the additional shipping costs.
The equipment is nice but not luxury, i have the machine for nearly 5 years without a problem, and the grinder for about two. Didn't buy them because they're fancy but because they are built to last.

If you want to be cheap pick your starter: French press, pourover, moka pot. Get your beans grinded to the consistency you need at a grocery store with grinders; its not ideal, but whole beans are sometimes cheaper, you'll have access to more choices, and you can get the correct ground. Also invest in a cheap stove kettle and a electric thermometer depending on the style you chose.

Biggest part of your budget should go to a grinder. You'll want conical burr instead of blade chopper for even and consistent grinds.
If you've got a lot of free time in the morning you can save a bit of cash with a manual grinder, but if you need a fine grind for moka or pour-over it might not be worth it.

yeah most likely your pre-ground coffee was an espresso grind, which I personally find is too fine for regular brew, makes the coffee bitter and too strong, but maybe you prefer that taste. like the other anon said, just try and grind it as fine as the other stuff.
also can just be variations, different beans have different strength and flavors

desu prolly a ceramic cone with filter papers is the least effort and best bang for your buck. get one on amazon for cheaper than any of the other options and get a box of filters for like $2. easiest method that doesn't require any waiting around or special techniques and by far the easiest cleanup. just toss the filter in the trash and rinse the cone and you're done.

Didn't mean it had to be dark roast robusta. Isn't cold brew uasally done with darker roasted beans? The whole flavor point of cold brew is emphasis on hearty roasted bitter flavors since you can't pull out the acidic notes. Also if anon is use to instant, and as far as I know instant tends to use robusta, they might want to cold brew that instead of arabica.

youve got it a little backwards, it's done with darker roasts because it pulls out less bitterness and is therefore smoother for dark roasts, lighter roasts tend to maintain their acidity and come off as much brighter without as much bitterness, which can tend to leave them thin because there's not much to balance it out. Otherwise yeah it is typically done with darker roasts but that's because cold brew generally makes worse tasting coffee into something enjoyable, I misunderstood what you were saying initially
