Every time I have any Bavarian beer (so far) it does have a yeasty taste. Sometimes it's good and sometimes it's too cloying.

I'd love to see a chart/geographic map of German beer styles, it would help me out a lot. I'm going to Berlin in September, do they have any good local styles or is it mostly just shit imported from elsewhere in Germany?

Nah, she'd love me. To answer your question, Germans make a lot of lagers and they are different than American style ales if that's what you're used to. Too many differences to get into here. I don't know what you mean by yeasty, they use different varieties of hops, and lagers are fermented at cooler temps which give a different flavor profile. That's just to name a couple differences.

the "yeasty" thing I'm referring to is that banana/bubble gum taste found in German wheat beers

weissbier yeast has a genetic mutation which makes it produce a lot more phenols and esters during fermentation compared to lager or ale yeast, hence the banana/bubble gum/clove characteristic found in weissbier

Oh okay, that makes sense. Is that present in all Bavarian ales?
Do you personally enjoy it?

i feel bad for you

on the topic at hand, i really appreciate the yeasty taste of german weissbier. hefeweizens are probably my favorite style of all

no. drink something other than a hef tardo

>> No.12658876

You wont find that taste in a pilsner unless it got bad somehow. Weizens use a specific stain of yeast that gives off that taste. But sometimes you can taste it in places where it's not supposed to be, like in a batch of a cheap macro export lager I had. I didn't mind it because it gave it a bit of character.

who tf drinks clear weißbier? The go to guide is Hefeweizen in the morning/before midday goes nice with some food and Helles (i guess its lager) in the afternoon/night.

I haven't had too many but Schneider Weisse's one was really good. Distinct taste and crispy. I don't get the hate, the best ones are better than many hefes.

The two biggest craft breweries in Berlin are lemke and brlo. The former one being served for example at 'tiergartenquelle' the other one has their own beer garden neer gleisdreieck.
As for Berliner Weisse. Try the lemke one and then get one anywhere else for it to be served with syrup which is what everybody coming to Berlin raves about.

It's not fruit beer. It's old style beer from before pils was invented and tastes like gastric acid. That's why it's normally mixed with raspberry or woodruf syrup

Do all Weihenstephaner products taste this way?

Its a great taste for the Hefe, but I was surprised to find that the other 3 products by them that I've tried all basically taste that way to an extent
