KFC is doing fine internationally - just not so much in America. It's over priced and there are better tasting options out there for us. The rest of the world doesn't really have a "fried chicken culture", so KFC is their standard and probably all some countries know about fried chicken.

In Japan, some brilliant marketing campaign many years ago brainwashed all of them into thinking that KFC = Christmas dinner. It worked and to this day, you have to pre-order your bucket of bird before it sells out over there.

Bring back the buffet! There's still a couple American KFC's, mostly in the South I think, that still do the buffet, but even then many only do it on lunch or week ends.
Or they could just start serving proper french fries. I get that this isn't really their brand, or whatever, but they've got the fryers for it and sandwich + french fries is such a fast food lunch staple that a lot of people will just go to McDonald's for chicken + fries.

With Chick Fil A expanding into more areas, there's less reason to go to KFC; it's not the only chicken place around anymore. The Chick Fil A where I live has had lines inside and outside almost nonstop since it opened two years ago, the KFC a quarter mile away is basically dead all hours of the day. When you can get moist, tender chicken with friendly Christian service a short drive away, why would you pay for dry heat lamp chicken served by felons hired for tax breaks?

We finally got a couple Popeyes locations, so the hype for it is still going strong. KFC took a considerable dip in quality: I remember as a kid I could eat endless amounts of their chicken, but just recently I got a bucket of chicken for the fuck of it and the chicken was totally shit. The chicken would fall apart upon picking it up, and I was only able to eat 3 pieces before I got a headache and felt sick. Many other KFC's are closing down too.
Whatever we have Mary Browns and her chicken is godlike.

KFC is "fast food" and Col. Sanders made it fast by his invention of the oil pressure fryer, the current method still used today. Previous to Col Saunders chicken used to take a long time to cook, you see, so it wasn't made to order but under a lamp and old, or the pieces and parts had occasional waits.
Pressure cookers literally drive the oil deep into the chicken piece, not just under the skin, but down to the bone, and into the muscle flesh itself. Instead of frying acting like a temperature bath, and skin acting like a barrier to the oil, it's saturated in oil. It's not healthy, and it going to give sensitive people a stomach ache, or even IBS grumbles and diarrhea if they have a less than working gall bladder. Guess what category fat people are in? The kind with issues with fatty foods, pre-diabetic types. I'll take a pass unless I'm desperate and it's the only thing open in an airport, as if :P
What also might have happened? Wal-mart and every other grocery made the business model of hot food for a good price. KFC is expensive for what it is. I can pick up a box of fried chicken from my grocery, or even better, a rotisserie chicken, and a cheap 2 liter, and sides from the deli. Busy people who are willing too get out of their car for 5 minutes can get dinner for a crowd for a better price with a better selection.

part of the problem is they did that sort of, they're owned by the same company that owns taco bell. There are even Taco Bell/Pizza Hut/KFC combo restaurants. KFC's problem is they're trying to run their shit like those places, but you aren't going to fucking match the profit margins of taco bell where 'food' is assembled with a caulking gun. They've drastically reduced the quality of their food - instead of soaking it in buttermilk now they just dunk it in water for 5 seconds. They use different oil, they use different chicken, they use different ingredients. They do everything they can to make their process simple and fast so idiots can do it.

Sanders regretted selling out his business for a long time after he did, just like the Macdonald brothers.

It's expensive as fuck for what it is and the chicken has hardly any meat on it these days.

It wasn't intentional. They were selling whole birds and packaged dinners to ex-pats, since Japanese ovens are the size of a microwave and can't fit a turkey, and there's no yard space in which to operate a turkey frier.
Japan has no Christmas traditions of its own, being a pagan nation, but they like fried chicken just as much as everyone else and decided to go with it.
