Any beginner resources for learning how to cook? Not just recipes, but techniques/equipment/etc.
/fit/ has a great sticky, I was hoping /ck/ would too, given how closely related both boards are (or should be).
My parents weren't exactly the brightest bulbs, so I'm learning to cook and eat properly twenty-three years late.

I'd recommend just learning basic stuff first. Cooking eggs, rice, meat, essential stuff.

Basics with Babish is a pretty great video series, although it's aimed towards a slightly higher level of cooking than I think your looking for

His videos are fine. They're well produced and someone without much cooking knowledge could use them as a learning tool.
How about contributing rather than crying about things you don't like all day?

Baffling that people recommend shit YouTube channels with people that can't cook to newbies when there's countless books aimed at beginners made by people who can cook.

>> No.12635066

>>12635034
How is that baffling? A youtube video is just a click away, is free, and shows you exactly what to do. That's not to say books aren't useful, but it makes more sense to suggest a free easy way of learning to someone at first. Then they can go buy a book if they form a genuine interest in cooking.

Because the youtube channel you recommended is garbage. That's why.

I didn't recommend babish though.

You're makjng the classic /ic/ mistake, Anon. Don't use begginer mentality block you from trying shit out. Pick something you like no matter how complicated it is and just go for it following a recipie to the fucking letter, and research why they're doing things that way. And next time adjust to taste accordingly. There's youtube now so there's no excuse to fuck up. If you want the normie answer, eggs. Only because they're slightly easier to fuck up if youre a retard and if you can cook a good plate of eggs, you can pretty much do anything.

He's popular and you're on a site that thrives on being contrarian.

>> No.12635204

>>12635107
This is the correct answer. I basically just looked up recipes for food I wanted to make, and when I got really stumped I would call my mom, who's a great cook. You could do the same with someone you know or you could look it up on the internet. Seriously OP, pick something you want to eat and make it. Chicken is good meat to start with because it's decently cheap, versatile, and extremely forgiving if you fuck up.

Chef John from food wishes is an absolute ledge. Look up his vids on YT or the blog on the food wishes website. Follow exactly what he says to the letter and you literally cannot go wrong. I've made a ton of his dishes and they all turned out great

Let me spell this out since you are new here. Anything that is popular and mainstream will be labeled as shit on 4chan. At best, their argument comes down to nit picking minor problems the object or person might have. Just ignore him and move on.

Wow, someone is sensitive. I was just wanting for you to elaborate on your opinion. But I guess since you won't give me any reasons to not watch Babish, I'm going to go ahead and watch some of his videos and even try out some of the stuff he cooks. I'm sure he gives decent advice has more than a few decent recipes up his sleeves, otherwise he wouldn't be so popular.

Good Eats the TV series, and the book I'm a Just Here for the Food. Both have lots of great info on both how to cook stuff and why you want to use certain methods to cook.
Also for Chinese food Yan Can Cook.

In the time it took you to write out all your assmad replies you could have just explained to him why babish videos are bad. Just admit you hate popular things and move on.
