It's on par with the best I've ever tasted.
Which is not what I expected since I've tried the sherry smokey mix before (highland park).

Gave this one another try. Before I shot it cold and it wasn't very good. Now I sip at room temp like you're supposed to and it's much better (Evan Williams Bottled-in-Bond/White Label is superior, though).

Only ones you should shoot cold are mediocre or crummy ones primarily meant to be mixed with something (Jack Daniel's, Jim Beam White Label, etc.).

I don't get why people laud Ardbeg for not colouring. The colour of the spirit is still hidden when the bottle is on a store shelf, and the fact that the spirit is so pale means you don't actually care about the colour.

I'd say find a local bar with a decent selection of whisk(e)ys and have a couple different ones neat each time you visit. Take notes on what you like and what you don't. It feels more expensive than grabbing a mid-tier starter whisky to try now and then, but it doesn't take too many purchased bottles that taste like ass to you, so they get wasted, to make the costs even out.

In general, stay away from both the top and bottom shelves, cheap will be nasty and expensive will be wasted on a newbie.
All of them will burn and warm you up, different ones add different layers on top of that from the grains and aging used.

I have not had a truly enjoyable experience, a bottle worth seeking out, cheaper than Ardbeg 10.

It's funky sipping straight, but it works exceptionally well when mixed with cola. They really should just sell premixed JD Honey and cola drinks, as JD honey by itself is worthless.

Also, if you live in a small town like I do, mail order might be best for the sake of freshness. I'd imagine a lot of small town bottles will have sat on shelves for years, sometimes at too high of a temperature and/or exposed to light because not in a box, aging poorly, their flavors weakening.
I typically order from giant-ass stores in Southern California which, I imagine, go through inventory a lot quicker than the stores around here do, and I haven't mail-ordered a bottle that's been fucked up by improper storage yet.
This is a serious thing to consider when dropping ~$100 or more on a bottle.
