It's more about the amount of alcohol in the beverage. Downing shots is going to feel different than drinking wine because of the rate of alcohol absorbtion.

Absinthe was a meme about a decade ago. It's good if you like licorice, but the effects were overblown during prohibition, even when it had wormwood in it. I've had it with wormwood and it's not that exciting.

Peak absinth hype was 200 years ago when it was outlawed and then secondary hype was 10 years ago when it was decriminalized.

>>12599400
There was never "real deal" absinth, it's just strong alcohol.
Anything beyond drunkenness was caused by bathtub distillers using heavy metals and other poisons to dye inferior product.

>during prohibition
It was a meme drink during the 1800’s and was banned in the US a decade before prohibition. It has always had a crazy reputation due to writers/artists/poets claiming it’s what gave them their inspiration (among the cocaine, opium and every other drug they were taking).
I’ve had the “real deal” wormwood kind and it was just licorice booze.

The real deal isnt illegal, faggot. Very little thujone ever made it into the final product since it has a different vaporization temperature than alcohol, and spectrographic analysis of vintage absinthes confirm this. Wormwood as a flavor was reintroduced a decade ago, it is a flavor, not actual wormwood extract.
Wormwood is a toxic plant, it's main toxin is thujone.
Thujone will kill you before it will make you hallucinate, it was previously thought to bind in your brain the same way as THC, but this is no longer the case.

Have fun, drink deep, don't die.

>Thirteen samples of authentic absinthe dating from the preban era (i.e., prior to 1915) were analyzed for parameters that were hypothesized as contributing to the toxicity of the spirit, including naturally occurring herbal essences (thujone, pinocamphone, fenchone), methanol, higher alcohols, copper, and antimony. The total thujone content of preban absinthe was found to range between 0.5 and 48.3 mg/L, with an average concentration of 25.4 ± 20.3 mg/L and a median concentration of 33.3 mg/L. The authors conclude that the thujone concentration of preban absinthe was generally overestimated in the past. The analysis of postban (1915–1988) and modern commercial absinthes (2003–2006) showed that the encompassed thujone ranges of all absinthes are quite similar, disproving the supposition that a fundamental difference exists between preban and modern absinthes manufactured according to historical recipes. Analyses of pinocamphone, fenchone, base spirits, copper, and antimony were inconspicuous. All things considered, nothing besides ethanol was found in the absinthes that was able to explain the syndrome “absinthism”.

Absinthe has been a meme drink since the 19th fucking century

The belief that absinthe induces hallucinogenic effects is at least partly rooted in the fact that following some ten years of experiments with wormwood oil in the 19th century, the French psychiatrist Valentin Magnan studied 250 cases of alcoholism, and claimed that those who drank absinthe were worse off than those drinking ordinary alcohol, having experienced rapid-onset hallucinations.[81] Such accounts by opponents of absinthe (like Magnan) were cheerfully embraced by famous absinthe drinkers, many of whom were bohemian artists or writers.[82]

>Two famous artists who helped popularise the notion that absinthe had powerful psychoactive properties were Toulouse-Lautrec and Vincent van Gogh. In one of the best-known written accounts of absinthe drinking, an inebriated Oscar Wilde described a phantom sensation of having tulips brush against his legs after leaving a bar at closing time.[83]

>Notions of absinthe's alleged hallucinogenic properties were again fuelled in the 1970s, when a scientific paper suggested that thujone's structural similarity to THC, the active chemical in cannabis, presented the possibility of THC receptor affinity.[84][85] This theory was conclusively disproven in 1999.[86]

who tf isnt putting siracha on their takeout? i get gentiles ruin shit but its not like the recipe has changed, its easily a top tier condiment. sriacha aioli is great for fusion style sandwiches as well, and im sure there are more creative uses for it. imagine being this dense...

absinth on the other hand, especially if you follow the ole 1800s ass way of preparing it, is fucking prententious as shit. that being said ive never tried it and the kid in me wants to think that shit tastes as delicious as it looks. knowing how fuckin old it is its probably mostly bitter and spiced to all fuck though

It has a very strong anise flavor. I had some very nice absinthe that I sampled in a specialty liquor store in the Venetian in Las Vegas. They did the whole pour over sugar thing, and it wasn't bitter and overspiced. It was very different from what I'm used to drinking though, and it's not something that I would drink regularly.

Absinthe wasn’t a meme drink.
Absinthe was originally distributed to Napoleon’s troops as a treatment and preventative for malaria, which was prevalent in certain swampy areas.

Absinthe contains Wormwood, which is known to kill parasites.
Absinthe also contains a high alcohol percentage, which works as a muscle relaxant, which is helpfull for fighting muscle cramping, that can be caused by sicknesses like malaria.
The high alcohol content would also likely help sterilize water, to prevent other sicknesses such as typhoid.
Currently, malaria strains have become resistant to quinine, and treatments have been developed and used based on Wormwood.
