Hey everyone, so recently I came home from Germany and while I was there I had some of this shit.

Now for those of you that haven't had the chance to taste this fucking heaven on earth, it's called döner kebab and it's from Berlin, and while I wasnt expecting it to be that good everyone told me to try it so I did and it was some of the best food I've ever had.

>inb4 remove kebab reeeee immigrants

The basis of it is a somewhat flattened sesame seed bun, a sauce (usually garlic yoghurt, sesame yoghurt etc), döner meat, and vegetables such as red cabbage, cucumbers, tomatoes, onions and parsley. It's not that different from gyros.

After doing some research (I live in california) I found pretty much no stores offering this combination anywhere near me. Anyways, my thought is that this can be wildly popular if implemented into a restaurant idea, so for anyone who's tried this before (aka germanfags, /trv/fags, etc) and for anyone who just wants to give an opinion, do you think this could take off? Why or why not? Pic related.

Big meat lump on big stick like gyros and al pastor are already everywhere and people will always end up comparing it to what they know/are familiar with so the novelty will die quickly.

Here in Bongland you can have just the meat on top of chips with salad on the side, I prefer it this way.

I've always thought a subway-style Donner kebab place could work. Pick your bun/pitta/whatever then the meat filling, then add your lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, pickles, cheese, sauce etc etc.

This is essentially what they have for kebabs in Australia too.
You pick your meat, sauces, salad items. It is like a sandwich bar and funnily I never though of it that way before. They wrap it for you and you go with it, like a burrito.
Places also do baked potato with kebab meat on a plate too.

the best only way I see this working, especially in California, is as a food truck or a stand.

Offer pork, lamb, and veggie versions
choose sauce, choose veg, choose bread

Same concept as the taco truck or hotdog stand

Some guy on here posted pictures of his way to prepare Döner-style meat a couple of months back, it looked perfect but he never shared the recipe even when pressed, the selfish cunt. He pressed the meat and then shaved it down with a peeler, it was quite ingenious and looked exactly like the real thing after the meat was fried/broiled.

Because in Germany most of the eateries aren't franchises, not even small ones. The most famous is probably Mustafas Gemüsedöner in Berlin, but even that doesn't extend outside of Berlin. It's widely known by Europeans but the fame is carried by the local places, not franchises

If you have a:
a very very sharp knife
b:
a very very hot pan / grill that you don't crowd and don't stew your meat

then simply slicing your meat extremely thinly against the grain, heavily salting it, letting it sit for atleast a couple hours, and then cooking it so it browns and isn't overcooked, in some oil/ ghee.

you get something similar, but better.

there is definitely an increase in burger tourists but not enough that you could do what i've seen/heard of in other yurocountries, where there are """berlin experience""" places where you can buy overpriced club mate and schultheiss beer and other would be hip trash. also, from all countries where i have tried kebab, the german produced fat meat slabs have a special taste, could be my bias though

We have German Döner Kebab chains here in the UK as well as little independent food safety rating 2 star authentic Turkish kebab establishments that bypasses Germany.

It looks liker there's are already franchises in US and Canada, you can always ask to open one where you are.

I'd rather stick to gyros. Being an amerifat, I've only heard of kebabs recently and don't even know where to find them.

>> No.12565984

>>12565907
From my research of recipes based on this thread, it turns out gyros are just the amerifat name for kebab. I will say it's led me to come up with a homemade version I'm going to try since I live in an area of the US where anything middle eastern sounding will likely be shot up or bombed. Gonna make the sauce and pita homemade as well as the meat this week. Salivating.

>> No.12566011

Honestly, it's not a terrible idea because you could literally set up these restaurants in the tiniest kiosk imaginable.
Definitely could be a big money maker for such a small initial investment.
The problem with gyros/doner in the states is that the majority of places that make them buy the same big cylinder of meat from the same supplier. So they all taste very similar wherever you go.
You'll have to differentiate yourself somehow, but as long as you have a good location and can count on hungry drunks/students I think they can be very successful.
Full-service restaurant would be a mistake though.

That's exactly how it works in Italy.
They usually charge more if you only want meat in your bun.
Also, they are way chaper than most fast foods and at least offer you some vegetables.
