so then do you or anyone else have any recommendations for trying to into whiskey? so far the only whiskeys i could really enjoy were the flavored ones (vanilla whiskey, sarsaparilla whiskey) and they're typically less than 40% abv. are there any straight whiskeys or bourbons that are smooth and drinkable and don't have as much of a burn or bite? preferably below 80 proof?

>>12556513
It's a hard question to answer since I don't really know what flavor profiles you enjoy.

Generally speaking you should stay away from cheap stuff as those are usually more for mixed drinks than standing on their own. The flip side to that is you should also avoid the top shelf stuff as you will walk away feeling robbed for having paid top dollar for a whisky you didn't appreciate.

As far as bourbons are concerned, the best quality mid-range bottle imo is Four Roses single barrel. It's widely available normally but their barrel select is also pretty good. Bourbons are on the sweeter side of things too.

Don't feel like you have to be Mr tough guy and drink it neat right off the bat, ice is fine and watering down your whisky a bit will let you get into the underlying flavors without feeling like you're getting burned.

OP's Lot40 is a personal favorite of mine as well and a good way to get introduced to the spicyness of Rye whiskies.

Scotch is a bit tougher to get into, but if you happen to see a bottle of Tomatin 12 I'd recommend you give that a shot too. Sherried scotches are way more approachable than peaty ones and a good start.

All of these retail at around 35$

That'd be my go to suggestion for a cheap whisky that gives you an idea of what a Canadian rye is like. It's much better than it's price point suggests. I'd also suggest trying White Owl as a substitute in vodka mixers. I wouldn't bother with with stuff like Crown, Wisers, or Canadian Club. Before prohibition they were seen as premium whiskys in comparison to American still swill. Since then better stuff has come along.
