Do you like your mother's cooking, /ck/?

>> No.12550928

As a child, yes. Still now if she makes saucy, fatty things like shepherd's pie, lasagna. But overall, her food is too dry. She hates using oil because oil is high in calories, so many dishes are dry because it's 'healthy'.

>> No.12550933

>>12550919
yes, it's fucking great.
My father on the other hand can't cook for shit, but he insists on cooking whenever i come visit. Having overcooked riced with the consistency of fucking mashed potatoes.

>>12550933
See I have the opposite, my mom thinks putting one of those stoffers lasagnas in the microwave counts as cooking while my dad I fucking great at it.

>> No.12550992

My mother is from out East, so they learned how to cook. I could teach you a chicken soup that would make you piss your pants. They learned out to cook everything well, because they were poor.

>> No.12551049

hell fucking no
she made me hate:
>fish
>vegetables
>chicken
it took me a good 4-5 years after moving out to finally figure out those things can be prepared in a way that tastes GOOD

it's probably less that he's overcooking it and more that he's getting his proportions wildly wrong

All the women in my entire extended family are amazing cooks up until the current generation that is to say.

I've been very spoiled in terms of food

It's "ok"

My mom isn't awful at cooking but she doesn't enjoy cooking so she never learned to do anything properly and refuses to follow a recipe properly.

My mom is the best cook I know. I'm not just saying that either. She didn't get really good until after my brother and I had moved away from home though. When I was a kid I remember her burning things a lot.

>> No.12551227

>>12550919
My mom gave up when my dad divorced her 10 years ago.
She's cooked maybe 2 or 3 times a year since then. All she eats are frosted wheats dry with no milk and cans of cake icing with a spoon.
She barely even showers anymore.

>> No.12551244

Yes, she has an open mind and loves spicy food. I got my savoury tooth from her and every Friday we have something nice

my nan however does mostly boring English shit (though her spag bol is top tier). God I hate boiled anything...

>> No.12551260

Not anymore. She used to put effort in it, but now anytime I visit her for dinner, she cooks up an uninspired slop. Usually it's a rissoto with frozen veg, or some sort of pasta + veg combo. She refuses to add salt, spice, or any sauce, unless it's tomato sauce and even then it's never enough sauce so the dish just taste like raw pasta. If I cook ANYTHING and bring it for dinner, she will take a bite, complain that there's too much salt or spice, and then flat out refuse to eat it. Instead she will cook herself a hardboiled egg and have toast, which I find offensive after spending time out of my day making a more elaborate meal than prison slop.
And this is only a fairly recent development. I think alcoholism has mangled her grey matter.

>> No.12551272

>>12550919
Yes because she knows exactly what are my favorite flavor profiles so it's basically cheating. Comparing with other mothers, she's pretty good.
But like virtually every mothers, it's overrated. It's home cooking, it's nice, comfy, but it's never mind blowing. Most mothers use shortcuts, are not very technical, and are just doing it mindlessly without any research or innovation.

>> No.12551391

Yes, she taught me how, as did my grandmother.. Both my parents are good at cooking. Italian/French is a deadly combination.

>> No.12551398

Nope because she never learned to properly cook or ever cooked for us when we were growing up. Most she did was leave behind a bag of chicken fingers in a plastic hairnet that she got for free at the factory.
So my sister and I were pretty self reliant at an early age because we got tired of it and sometimes there wouldn't be any food at all.

>> No.12552121

I sure used to. When I was a kid back in the 20th century, Dad worked and Mom ran the house. She cooked at least one meal a day, plus packed Dad's lunch in a pail. Same with us kids - we didn't buy school lunch until after Dad died. What she made wasn't fancy by any stretch, but it was all made from scratch, and it was a balanced meal. We ate everything on our plate.

Mom is 85 now, and in good health, but she lives in a retirement apartment, and doesn't cook much anymore. I still ask her for recipes or tips on how to do cooking stuff every now and then. I wish that she and I had ever cooked together. It would have been fun. Maybe next time I visit her, I'll talk her into it.

>> No.12552142

No my mom "cooks" maybe once a month. She makes awful tacos, all she does is cook up ground beef and put it in a soft shell and calls it a taco. Literally that's all she does to it. No taco seasoning, no lettuce or even cheese not even FUCKING SALT

>> No.12552150

Shes alergic to alot of shit

>tomatoes
>onions
>citrus
>eggs
>corn
>beef
>any shellfish
>green beans

Other shit that im forgetting. Almonds and cashews i think but not peanuts strangely enough. So, its very limited what she can cook. Its all chicken pork and turkey for meats, which isnt that bad. No tomatoes, corn, eggs etc doesnt leave much variety.
Also she cant season for shit.

>> No.12552171

Yup. She's got a Master's in Food Science and has worked as a registered dietician for the last 20 years. I was lucky enough to have a home cooked meal basically every night growing up.

>> No.12552213

My mother, despite being 300lbs overweight, will turn a burger Patty into a rock. I originally got into cooking in fact to keep her from ruining the food.

>> No.12552331

My mom's food is usually hit or miss.
She likes to try out new things and keeps a super well stocked spice cabinet, but the biggest problem is that she never throws anything away. She'll consistently cook with very expired food.

My step-mom's food is great. She's Puerto Rican and makes stellar stuff. Not as good as my abuela, though.
I don't think anything can touch grandmother cooking.

Ramsay would throw a massive fit if he sees my mom cook. She puts the food on then walks to the livingroom to watch tv then if anyone walks to the kitchen she asks them to check on the food. She overcooks everything.

Once years ago I came back from school to find the house full of smoke, my mother was in bed and figured it was okay to leave it on simmering cause she thought I was going to be home soon.

Ramsay would probably strangle her.

I've always liked my moms cooking and i'm always nice to her and thank her when she cooks for me. But she's not a -great- cook.

>tfw parents always considered themselves good cooks and both of them like cooking and do it to unwind
>i start making food that's clearly better than theirs
>eventually they admit i'm a better cook
>tfw they start actually trying again to put more effort into food and trying new recipes and stuff because they realise how much they're slipping

They do a lot of bad cook things though
>don't taste their food while cooking
>don't roast off bones for stock or cook it long enough
>habitually overcook meat and vegetables yet always apologize for it
>don't understand how to balance things
>chop ingredients lazily into hard to eat sizes,
>constantly burn olive oil and garlic
>dad always uses too much oil, mom not enough,
>buy too much food and forget about it and constantly cook half spoiled food
>when they try to cook asian food it's hilariously bad

still pretty good though.
bless their hearts.

My mom is a horrible cook, which I never understood. She comes from a long line of great cooks, and her brother is a great cook too, so it's not like her parents didn't try. I think my father used to be a great cook but my mom told him he was doing everything wrong so he eventually he just gave up. The rare times he'll cook it'll be really good. I always hated my mother's cooking, my dad was always the better cook because he was more innovative and actually would throw in different ingredients or completely making recipes up from scratch, my mom mostly just followed recipes from her mother's cookbooks and refused to really adapt them or change them. My mom did however have excellent baking recipes, she always made really great pies, bread rolls, biscuits and cobbler. It's weird because cooking isn't something that takes any sort of unique skill and it's something everyone can become good at because it's really just a lot of trial and error and some degree of creativity.
