Nashville, Knoxville, Chattanooga, and the smaller cities are all awesome. Memphis is ratchet but easy to avoid since it's not even the capital.

Check out Sweet Ps on Jackson Ave if you want barbecue. Can be a bit pricey depending on what you're used to and who's cooking that day but it's usually pretty good. Brewery just down the street has some good stuff too.
If you end up in Asheville check out BiscuitHeads for some great breakfast stuff.
Knoxville is a pretty good place to live if you stay away from papermill and West town during rush.

North Knoxville here. There's a little hole in the wall soul food place called Jackie's Dream in woodland. Get the Knox Hot Chicken, crazy hot, with potato salad and fried okra. Get the texas toast, the corn muffins suck.

The fried catfish is superb
